2024 Volvo C40 Recharge price and specs: Range boost, RWD for updated coupe electric SUV
Key Points
- C40 coupe electric SUV updated with more range
- Single-motor goes RWD, dual-motor gets larger battery
- Priced from $76,990, rivals Model Y, EV6, EQA
The Volvo C40 Recharge coupe electric SUV has been given a minor update, with a host of hardware tweaks to add more driving range and improve battery cooling efficiency.
The single-motor variant has now switched to rear-wheel drive, whereas the dual-motor gains a bigger battery with faster charging capabilities.
It’s due to land in Australia in the third quarter of 2023 (July to September inclusive) and is available to order now. However, there have been price rises – $3000 for the single-motor and $4500 for the dual-motor.
The C40 Recharge now costs from $78,990 to $87,990 before on-road costs and provides between 476km to 507km of claimed WLTP driving range depending on the variant.
The luxury electric SUV is eligible for select Australian electric car incentives, excluding the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for company fleets and novated leases.
The Volvo C40 EV rivals models such as the boxier related XC40 Recharge, Tesla Model Y, Polestar 4, Kia EV6, and Mercedes-Benz EQA electric cars.
C40 Recharge Key Specs: Range, Charging and Size
The updated Volvo C40 EV single-motor variant switches to rear-wheel drive (previously front-wheel-driven), gets a power bump to 175kW (up 5kW), increased claimed WLTP range to up to 476km (up 38km), and more aerodynamic 19-inch alloy wheels.
Meanwhile, the dual-motor gains a larger 79kWh usable battery (up 4kWh), longer claimed driving range of up to 507km (up 56km), faster 200kW DC charging capability (previously 150kW), and a new in-house developed permanent magnet rear motor paired with an asynchronous front motor producing the same outputs, albeit with a tweaked torque split.

How does the C40 Recharge compare to other EVs?
The Volvo C40 Recharge compares well against its electric SUV competition, with more claimed WLTP driving range than the Tesla Model Y.
But, it can't charge as fast as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 that have an 800-volt class battery architecture and has less boot space.
