The introduction of the 2024 Toyota bZ4X marks a significant move for Toyota as it enters the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market, presenting itself as another alternative to the well-established Tesla Model Y. With pricing for the bZ4X starting at $66,000 for the two-wheel drive single-motor variant and going up to $74,900 for the all-wheel drive dual-motor model, Toyota is aiming to capture the attention of consumers looking for mid-size SUV electric options.
Trim/Variant | Price (before on-road costs) |
2WD | $66,000 |
AWD | $74,900 |
The Tesla Model Y, by comparison, starts at a slightly lower entry point of $65,400 for the rear-wheel drive model, but the all-wheel drive Long Range model sits at a higher price point at $78,400. The bZ4X will cost $7640 more than the most expensive Toyota RAV4 Hybrid ($58,360).
Each variant is equipped with a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery, promising an ample WLTP-tested range of 436km for the 2WD and 411km for the AWD model. Fast charging capabilities also stack up well, with the ability to charge at 150kW on a DC fast charger.
The Toyota BZ4X is considered as a twin to the Subaru Solterra, built on Toyota's e-TNGA dedicated EV platform and sharing an almost identical battery, motor and chassis package.
The Toyota bZ4X is eligible for the what's left of the Australian electric car incentives, including the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for company fleets and novated leases.

How does the Toyota bZ4X compare to other EVs?
The Toyota bZ4X is considered as a twin to the Subaru Solterra and will also be competing with similarly priced medium-sized electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.
Toyota bZ4X 2WD
The base model Toyota bZ4X 2WD is priced competitively, with a starting price very close to its competitors. It is only priced $600 above the popular Tesla Model Y RWD.
For its price, the bZ4X offers a lot of value in the battery category, it has a larger (usable) battery capacity compared to its close competitors and even beats out the Tesla Model Y. Only the much more expensive Kia EV6 RWD offers a better (usable) battery capacity. However the bZ4X underperforms in the charging category, with all of its close competitors offering much better AC and DC charging power capacities.
Toyota bZ4X AWD
The all-wheel drive Toyota bZ4X AWD is also priced competitively, being the most affordable among its close competitors - specifically undercutting the popular Tesla Model Y Long Range by $3500.
Spec-wise, the bZ4X AWD offers the least driving range and worst acceleration compared to its close competitors. This is expected, after all the bZ4X AWD was made to specialize as an all-terrain, off-road vehicle.
Similar to the base model, the bZ4X AWD still underperforms in the charging category compared to its close competitors.
Zecar's Take on the Toyota bZ4x
Toyota has come late to the party with the bZ4x. Toyota has priced the entry level 2WD very competitively at $66,000 before on-road costs. It offers solid range, charging speed and features at its price point.
Toyota, Australia's (and the world's) best selling automaker has a vaunted reputation for selling reliable and relatively affordable cars. This reputation however has not translated into sales success for the bZ4x overseas, which it had solid in very modest numbers.
Potential customers of the bZ4x will likely be loyal Toyota customers looking to switch to an electric option.
