Which EV energy plan suits your household?
The best EV charging plan depends on when your car is parked at home and how far you drive. Pick the situation closest to yours.
You charge overnight and don't have solar
Choose a plan with a cheap overnight window. OVO Energy The EV Plan charges 4.5c/kWh from 12am to 6am, and Powershop EV Night charges 4.99c/kWh in the same window. AGL Night Saver EV and Alinta Energy HomeEV are 8c/kWh.
A 7 kW wall charger can add about 42 kWh in a six-hour window. That is roughly 260 km of driving for a typical EV using 16 kWh per 100 km.
You're home in the middle of the day or have solar
Free midday windows suit households where the car is parked at home during the day. OVO Energy The Free 4 Plan, GloBird Four4Free and Powershop EV Day are free from 11am to 3pm. Charging in the middle of the day also uses the grid when solar generation is highest.
You need to charge both day and night
CovaU EVMax (5.5c/kWh in VIC, 6c/kWh elsewhere) and GloBird EasyEV (6c/kWh) cover 12am to 6am and 11am to 2pm. The cheap rate applies to the first 30 kWh a day across both windows. For CovaU, that allowance covers all household electricity used in those windows, not just the car.
You drive a lot
Rideshare drivers and long-distance commuters should check daily caps. Driving 30,000 km a year uses about 4,800 kWh, or 13 kWh a day on average. Plans with no daily cap listed, such as OVO The EV Plan, Powershop EV Night and AGL Night Saver EV, keep the cheap rate however much you charge in the window.
You live in an apartment or rely on public charging
If you can't charge at home every day, look for public charging credit. Engie EV Flex Charge includes a $100 Chargefox voucher and Momentum Energy EV Does It includes a $100 Evie voucher. See our guide to EV charging networks in Australia.
Origin EV Power Up charges scheduled EV charging at 8c/kWh at any time of day, but you need a compatible BYD or Tesla linked in the Origin app.

Free EV charging electricity plans and Solar Sharer
Five plans in our table include free charging for set hours:
- OVO Energy The Free 4 Plan: free 11am–3pm in NSW, QLD, SA and VIC; smart meter required.
- GloBird Four4Free: free 11am–3pm for the first 50 kWh a day; needs a smart meter and time-of-use tariff.
- Powershop EV Day: free 11am–3pm with an EV registered at the premises; fair use applies.
- Red Energy Red Power5: free 11am–4pm for the first 15 kWh a day in VIC, covering the whole home.
- ActewAGL evEnergy Saver: free 12pm–2pm on Saturdays and Sundays in the ACT.
How much a free window is worth depends on your charger. In a four-hour window, a 7 kW wall charger adds about 28 kWh, or around 175 km of range. A standard 10 amp powerpoint adds about 9 kWh, or around 55 km.
Solar Sharer: three free hours a day
The federal government's Solar Sharer scheme requires retailers in NSW, south-east Queensland and South Australia to offer plans with three hours of free electricity in the middle of the day, from July 2026. You need a smart meter and must opt in, and the government plans to extend it to Victoria and WA. Read our Solar Sharer guide for the details.
A Solar Sharer plan is not always cheaper than an EV plan. Some EV plans also give you a cheap overnight window, so compare both before you switch.

Most EV-specific energy plans require:
✅ A smart meter – Tracks electricity use by time of day, often upgraded for free
✅ Time-of-use tariff – Charges different rates for peak, off-peak, and shoulder periods
✅ An EV registered at the address – Some providers require proof of EV ownership
While none of these plans require a dedicated EV wall charger, installing one can help maximise the benefits of short free-charging windows by speeding up charge times.

Consider installing a dedicated wall charger to take advantage of discounted charging windows. For example a typical wall charger can deliver 21 kWh of energy in a three hour window compared to 6 kWh from a standard powerpoint.

No. You can charge on any plan, but an EV plan gives you a cheaper rate during set hours. For example, OVO Energy's The EV Plan charges 4.5c/kWh from 12am to 6am. Most EV plans need a smart meter, and some need an EV registered at your address.
Do EV electricity plans make daytime power more expensive?
They can. Rates outside the cheap window vary by network and can be higher than on a standard plan. Check the peak rate, daily supply charge and feed-in tariff before you switch. EV Energy Compare shows these rates for your address.
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
A typical driver covering 15,000 km a year uses about 2,400 kWh. At 4.5c/kWh that costs about $108 a year. At a standard rate of 35c/kWh it costs about $840. Use our EV charging cost calculator to work out the cost for your car.
Which EV electricity plan is the cheapest?
For overnight charging, OVO Energy The EV Plan is the cheapest at 4.5c/kWh from 12am to 6am. For daytime charging, OVO The Free 4 Plan, GloBird Four4Free and Powershop EV Day are free from 11am to 3pm. The cheapest plan for you depends on your network and when you charge.
Is a night saver EV plan worth it?
Usually, if you charge overnight. Overnight EV rates of 4.5c to 8c/kWh are well below standard rates, which are typically 30c/kWh or more. Check the rates outside the window, because a household that uses a lot of power in the evening can lose some of the saving.
Does Red Energy have an EV plan?
Red Energy's Red Power5 plan in Victoria gives you the first 15 kWh a day free from 11am to 4pm. The free allowance covers your whole home, not just the car. After 15 kWh, you pay about 15.4c to 16.4c/kWh in the window.
Can I get an EV plan without a smart meter?
No. Every plan in our table needs a smart meter, because the retailer has to measure when you use electricity. Your retailer can usually arrange the upgrade, often at no cost.
Do I need to own an EV to get an EV electricity plan?
It depends on the plan. GloBird EasyEV, Powershop EV Day and EV Night, AGL Night Saver EV, Synergy EV Add On and ActewAGL evEnergy Saver need an EV, or an EV registered at the address. OVO Energy's plans only list a smart meter as a requirement.
