Key Points
- OVO Energy's The EV Plan offers a rate of 4.5c/kWh for electricity used between midnight and 6am, down from the previous 6c/kWh rate.
- The plan requires a smart meter and a registered electric vehicle, with no separate controlled load circuit and standard supply charges still applying.
- OVO no longer advertises a daytime free electricity window on this plan. The current offer is overnight only.
OVO Energy has updated The EV Plan, its home energy plan for electric vehicle owners. The plan now charges 4.5c/kWh for electricity used between midnight and 6am, replacing the previous 6c/kWh overnight rate.
The plan is built around a single overnight charging window rather than separate day and night rates. OVO positions it as a tariff that covers both EV charging and general household electricity use.
Plan Rate and Charging Window
The EV Plan has one discounted window for EV charging:
OVO The EV Plan Charging Window
Charging Window | Rate | Days |
12am to 6am | 4.5c/kWh | Every day |
Standard rates apply outside the overnight window. The plan excludes controlled load, and supply charges still apply on top of usage rates.
How Much Energy Do You Actually Need?
The six-hour overnight window gives most EV owners more charging capacity than they need on a typical day. A standard wall charger delivers around 7kWh per hour, so six hours can supply over 40kWh at the discounted rate. The average driver who covers a distance of 37km/day would use 7kWh/day. Average household electricity consumption in Australia sits at around 20kWh per day. The discounted window is more than enough to cover average charging requirements and household needs during the cheaper charging window.
How The EV Plan Compares to Other Plans
At 4.5c/kWh, OVO's overnight rate is now the lowest of any EV electricity plan tracked by zecar. Here is how it compares to the other leading overnight and flexible plans:
EV Energy Plans Compared
Plan | Low-Cost Rate | Low-Cost Window(s) | Day and Night? |
OVO Energy The EV Plan | 4.5c/kWh | 12am-6am | Night only |
Powershop EV Night | 5c/kWh | 12am-4am | Night only |
GloBird Easy EV | 6c/kWh | 11am-2pm + 12am-6am | Yes |
Engie EV Night Saver | 6c/kWh | 12am-6am | Night only |
AGL Night Saver EV | 8c/kWh | 12am-6am | Night only |
At 4.5c/kWh, OVO now undercuts every other overnight plan Zecar tracks, including Powershop EV Night at 5c/kWh. The trade-off is that OVO's window only runs overnight. GloBird's Easy EV plan is the only major alternative offering a daytime window alongside an overnight rate, though its overnight rate sits 1.5c/kWh higher than OVO's.
