Performance and range

Power and range increase up the range. The entry RWD Standard Range uses the smaller of two battery options, while the RWD Long Range and both AWD Performance variants share an 80.8kWh pack. The AWD Performance Black Edition shares its battery, charging, range and performance specification with the standard AWD Performance, differing only in exterior treatment and price.

How the Refresh Changes the G6

Comparing like-for-like variants, the refresh cuts price on both the Standard Range and Long Range while adding range and dramatically faster DC charging. The Long Range also swaps its old NMC battery for LFP chemistry. XPeng has not published a 0-100km/h figure for the outgoing Long Range in Zecar's records, so that cell is marked as not stated rather than estimated.

XPeng ANZ confirms 5C ultra-fast charging across the New G6 range, with 10 to 80 percent DC charging in as little as 12 minutes under test conditions. XPeng's local release specifically quotes the 451kW peak DC figure for the Long Range variant. It does not separately break out a peak DC figure for the AWD Performance variants, though earlier XPeng documentation lists the same 451kW ceiling for those models. Real-world charging speed depends on charger availability, vehicle condition and ambient temperature. Charging port type is CCS2 across the range.

Interior and technology

XPeng has confirmed interior specifications for the Australian-spec New G6. All variants get a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air software update capability, and an XOPERA audio system with 18 speakers in a 7.1.4 surround layout. Dual wireless phone charging is standard across the range.

Nappa leather trim, and heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, are available depending on variant. XPeng's release does not specify which of these are standard versus optional on each grade, so Zecar has asked XPeng Australia to confirm the exact equipment split.

Second row seating is consistent across the range: 60/40 split fold, backrest adjustment, outer seat heating and a centre armrest with cup holders.

XPeng has not published an ANCAP safety rating for the New G6. Zecar will update this article once a rating is confirmed.

Driver assistance

The New G6 is fitted with XPeng's XPILOT Assist driver assistance suite. XPeng lists the following features as available on Australian-specification vehicles:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Centering Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Rear Collision Warning
  • Door Open Warning
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Surround-view system with transparent chassis view

XPeng notes that final feature availability is subject to Australian specification, and that XPILOT Assist is a driver assistance system rather than a substitute for an attentive driver.

Exterior and colours

The RWD Standard Range rides on 18-inch wheels as standard, with 20-inch wheels optional. The RWD Long Range and both AWD Performance variants run 20-inch wheels only. The Standard Range and Long Range are available in five exterior colours: Arctic White, Silver Frost, Graphite Grey, Midnight Black and Stellar Purple.

The AWD Performance Black Edition is a confirmed, separately priced variant rather than an option pack. It carries a $3,000 premium over the standard AWD Performance and adds exclusive black paint, black-finished 20-inch wheels, smoked-black exterior badging, smoked-black housings on the front fender and front door camera units, smoked-black front bumper light strip accents and black brake calipers. It shares its underlying battery, charging, range and performance specification with the standard AWD Performance.

Shared exterior equipment includes LED auto headlights, hidden door handles, rain-sensing wipers, powered and heated folding mirrors with blind spot monitoring, soundproofed front glass, one-touch anti-pinch windows, a panoramic insulated glass roof and an electric tailgate. All variants use front and rear ventilated disc brakes with XPeng's OneBox braking system, and offer Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual drive modes.

Damian Royce, XPeng ANZ's Head of Marketing, described the New G6 as an important step for the brand locally, pointing to its design, charging speed, technology and driver assistance as key selling points for buyers considering a premium electric SUV.

How It Stacks Up Against Rivals

Against the Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X, the New G6 undercuts both rivals at the Long Range and Performance price points.

On price, the G6 Long Range undercuts the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD by $12,100 and the Zeekr 7X RWD Long Range by $7,100, though the 7X claims considerably more range. The G6 AWD Performance undercuts the Tesla Model Y Performance by $25,600 and the Zeekr 7X Performance AWD by $9,100, while offering more power than either rival at that price point. Acceleration is where the G6 Performance gives up ground: both the Tesla and the Zeekr Performance variants are quicker to 100km/h.
