XPeng Eyes Australia For Its Flagship EV Sedan

Comments

A high-tech electric luxury sedan from China is being considered as a direct replacement for the now-absent Tesla Model S in Australia. The XPeng P7+, which made its local debut at the Melbourne EV Show, is under study for an Australian release by local EV importer TrueEV. Already on sale in China and showcased in parts of Europe, the P7+ presents itself as a potential game-changer in the premium EV space, offering advanced tech and sleek styling at a price that could sit just below Australia’s luxury car tax threshold.

Filling the Tesla Model S Gap

Jason Clarke, CEO of TrueEV, expressed strong interest in bringing the vehicle to Australian roads. Recalling the first time he saw the Model S, Clarke said the P7+ has the potential to fill the void left behind by Tesla’s discontinued right-hand-drive flagship. With ongoing market testing now underway, the decision will ultimately come down to demand. TrueEV has already imported a unit for evaluation and is pressing XPeng’s global leadership for a local launch should the response be favourable.

If greenlit, the XPeng P7+ would bring an impressive mix of performance and innovation to the market. The model on show in Melbourne features a 230kW rear-mounted electric motor paired with a 76.3kWh battery. Claimed WLTP range figures fall between 560km and 610km, supported by an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.206. The car accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds and can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in just 12 minutes, thanks to its 800-volt architecture.

AI Tech and Performance Features

Beyond numbers, the P7+ leans heavily into artificial intelligence. XPeng has developed its own Turing chip, enabling what it calls "AI-defined smart driving." The car adapts to driver habits and environmental conditions, aiming to enhance safety, efficiency, and ride quality over time. It analyses how you drive, how you consume energy, and even offers tips to improve performance and battery usage. This tech-forward focus is complemented by a high-end cabin featuring multiple digital screens and a 20-speaker sound system.

At over five metres in length and nearly two metres wide, the P7+ is a large, imposing sedan with a liftback design and generous storage space. The boot is 725 litres, expanding to over 2200 litres with the rear seats folded. Despite its size and high-end features, TrueEV says it aims to keep pricing below the $91,387 luxury car tax threshold for efficient vehicles, a move that could position it as an attractive alternative to significantly pricier rivals.

More XPeng Models on the Horizon

The P7+ joins a growing list of XPeng models either confirmed or under consideration for the Australian market, alongside the G9 SUV, the G7, the Mona M03 compact sedan, and the X9 people mover. TrueEV already sells the XPeng G6 SUV locally, and with momentum building, the P7+ could mark a bold next step in the brand’s expansion into Australia’s premium EV segment.
