A world first has been achieved in Australia, with a Tesla Model Y completing a full circumnavigation of the country using Tesla’s recently launched Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system.
EV long-distance specialist Harald Murphy drove 13,577 km in just 11 days this month, relying on FSD Supervised for more than 99.9% of the journey.

Driving Australia with Minimal Human Input
Murphy’s journey highlights the capabilities of Tesla’s driver-assist software, which only recently arrived in Australia - the first right-hand-drive market to access it.
He reported that the only times he disengaged FSD were for brief moments: overtaking trucks in poor visibility and manually steering into charging bays. By his estimate, less than 10 km of the trip was not driven by the system.
The Model Y covered highways, remote stretches, and city traffic across major points including Perth, Karratha, Fitzroy Crossing, Katherine, Hughenden, Newcastle, Melbourne, and Ceduna before returning to Perth.

Efficiency and Endurance on Display
Despite covering vast high-speed sections of the country, Murphy’s Model Y maintained strong efficiency. The car consumed 2,295 kWh of energy at an average of 169 Wh/km.
The run was completed in his Launch Series refreshed Model Y, which features Tesla's latest technology stack HW4.
The trip demonstrates how well the FSD system manages long-haul conditions. For Murphy, the most noticeable benefit was reduced fatigue, a commonly cited benefit of most good driver assist systems.

Tesla FSD Supervised in Australia
Tesla only released FSD Supervised to the public last week, with some early access for select drivers beforehand. The system allows Teslas to perform most everyday driving tasks autonomously under driver supervision.
Already, thousands of kilometres are being logged daily in Australia with FSD Supervised. Tesla expects adoption to accelerate as the rollout expands and more test drives become available.
