Tesla Hits 8 Million EVs And Australia Gets A Big Share

Comments

Tesla has officially clocked eight million electric vehicles globally, with the milestone car, a shiny red Model Y, rolling off the line at its Berlin gigafactory.

Just nine months after reaching the seven million mark, the company’s production momentum shows no signs of slowing down. In classic Tesla fashion, they marked the moment with a photo on X (formerly Twitter): one car, a proud team, and that unmistakable Elon-esque flair for big milestones.

But here’s what Aussie EV fans really care about: over 120,000 of those 8 million Teslas are now cruising on Australian roads, making us a modest, but a key feature in Tesla's global story.

From “production hell” to global domination

It took Tesla 12 years to make its first million vehicles. Back then, CEO Elon Musk famously referred to the ramp-up of the Model 3 as “production hell.” Fast forward to 2024–25, and the company is now pumping out a million cars roughly every nine months. This is a big step fora brand once doubted for making cars with door handles that needed an instruction manual.

Where are Aussie Teslas built?

Most Aussie Tesla fans already know that our Teslas come from Shanghai, not California. In fact, 110,000+ of the Teslas delivered here have been built in Tesla’s Chinese gigafactory since 2021. That switch from Fremont to Shanghai sped up delivery times, dropped prices, and made it easier for Aussies to get their hands on the ever-popular Model 3 and Model Y.

Earlier in the year Tesla confirmed the Model S and Model X luxury variants would be no longer shipped to Australia, with the Fremont factory now focused on other markets.

Berlin's moment to shine

The latest million-milestone car being made in Berlin’s GigaFactory is also a subtle flex by Tesla. Opened in 2022, the Berlin factory primarily produces Model Y units for Europe, with a particular focus on left-hand-drive countries. But its role goes beyond Europe. It’s a key cog in Tesla’s global expansion, especially as the brand prepares to launch cheaper models and rideshare services (yes, Teslas as Ubers) in Austin, Texas.
