Key Points
- Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on X on Friday 6 November 2026 that Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas will wind down around the middle of next year.
- Musk said the factory space is needed to increase production of the Cybercab, Tesla's purpose-built robotaxi.
- Tesla confirmed in October that the Cybertruck will not be sold in Australia or New Zealand, so local buyers are not affected.
Elon Musk has said Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027. He announced the decision in a post on X on Friday 6 November 2026.
Musk said the space is needed to build more of the Cybercab. The Cybertruck was never due in Australia. Tesla emailed local reservation holders in October to say the project had been cancelled.
What Musk said about the Cybertruck
Musk wrote that Tesla will be winding down Cybertruck production at the Texas factory around the middle of next year. He said the reason is to make room for increased Cybercab production.
Musk did not say whether Cybertruck production will move to another site or end altogether. He also did not give a final build date or explain what happens to existing orders, according to Reuters and other outlets.
A slow run for the Cybertruck
The Cybertruck reached customers in the United States in November 2023. Sales have fallen well short of Musk's early targets. He once said Tesla could eventually sell 250,000 to 500,000 trucks a year.
Benzinga cited estimates of 7000 to 8000 sales in the third quarter of 2026. Cox Automotive data cited by Drive shows US sales fell to 20,237 in 2025 from 38,965 in 2024. The truck has also faced several recalls.
What it means for Australia
Nothing changes for Australian buyers. Tesla cancelled the Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand on 22 October 2026. It told reservation holders their deposits would be refunded in full.
Tesla has shown the Cybercab locally on a tour that began in Sydney in September. Tesla has not announced an Australian launch for it. Buyers who want a Tesla can still order a Model 3 or Model Y through Zecar's Tesla referral link, or compare a novated lease against buying outright.
What is still unconfirmed
- The exact date production ends. Musk said "around the middle of next year".
- Whether the Cybertruck moves to another factory or is discontinued.
- What happens to existing orders and future updates for current owners.
