Key Points

  • The Trailseeker is Subaru’s second electric car in Australia, following the Solterra.
  • It produces 280 kW from dual motors and claims up to 533 km of WLTP range.
  • Ground clearance of 211 mm is among the highest of any electric vehicle on sale.

Subaru has opened pre-orders for the Trailseeker, a new dual-motor electric wagon for Australia. It is the brand's second electric model here, joining the Solterra . Subaru calls it a Sport Electric Vehicle (SEV), a term it uses across its growing EV range.

The Trailseeker is priced from $67,990 for the AWD variant and $73,990 for the AWD Touring. Pre-orders are open through Subaru retailers and subaru.com.au.

Wagon Shape, SUV Capability

Despite being classified as an SUV, the Trailseeker has a wagon-like shape. It sits low and wide with a raked roofline and a sculpted bonnet. This gives it a different profile to most upright electric SUVs on the market.

Ground clearance is 211 mm. That is one of the highest figures among electric vehicles currently available. The table below shows how it compares to other EVs and electric-capable models.

Powertrain and Performance

The Trailseeker uses a dual-motor setup producing 280 kW combined. Subaru claims a 0 to 100 km/h time of approximately 4.5 seconds. Power goes to all four wheels through Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

The 74.7 kWh CATL lithium-ion battery sits low in the platform, which helps keep the centre of gravity down. The standard AWD variant claims up to 533 km of WLTP range. The Touring variant claims up to 488 km.

DC fast charging supports up to 150 kW, taking the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. AC charging is available at up to 22 kW for those with three-phase power at home or work.

Off-Road Systems

The Trailseeker comes with dual-mode X-Mode, Downhill Assist Control and a Multi-Terrain Monitor. These systems are designed to help on loose or uneven surfaces beyond sealed roads.

The platform is Subaru’s e-Subaru Global Platform, shared with other models in the brand’s electric range.

Trailseeker vs Outback: Electric vs Petrol

Subaru Outback

Considered the electric equivalent of an Outback, its worth comparing the key differences between the two.

The Trailseeker is significantly quicker and cleaner than the Outback, though it costs around $19,000 more at entry level. The Outback retains a ground clearance advantage and a longer effective range between fill-ups, while the Trailseeker's 533 km WLTP range is more than adequate for most Australian driving.
