NSW Reveals Interactive Tourism Map Designed For EV drivers

NSW introduces Eventuremap

Key Points

  • NSW has launched the free EVenturemap charging and tourism platform
  • Drivers can find chargers plus nearby cafés, attractions and amenities
  • Charger clusters appear strongest in Sydney, Hunter and major regional routes
  • QR codes at chargers open local walking-distance guides

New South Wales has launched a new digital tool aimed at making electric vehicle road trips easier and far more interesting.

Called EVenturemap, the free online platform combines EV charging locations with nearby attractions, food venues and travel essentials, helping drivers turn charging downtime into useful or enjoyable stops.

Rather than simply showing where chargers are located, the map is designed to help EV owners discover local towns, cafés, parks, shops and other experiences while their car recharges.

The project has been developed through the Joint Organisation Net Zero Accelerator (JONZA) Program, working alongside regional councils and local organisations across NSW.

It reflects a broader shift in thinking: charging stops are no longer just delays, but part of the travel experience.

Chargers spread across Sydney, regional NSW and key inland routes

Based on the map rollout, charger coverage appears strongest along the east coast and major population centres, with growing support across inland NSW travel corridors.

From the image provided, charger clusters appear concentrated in:

  • Sydney and Greater Sydney (largest network concentration)
  • Newcastle / Hunter region
  • Canberra corridor / Southern NSW
  • Illawarra / South Coast
  • Central West NSW including Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo corridors
  • Riverina region
  • Northern NSW inland routes
  • Far west NSW regional towns

The densest concentration remains around metropolitan Sydney, but the map suggests growing infrastructure in regional tourism zones and highway routes where charging confidence matters most.

Drivers can also scan QR codes placed on participating chargers to instantly open local guides within walking distance, including:

  • Cafes and restaurants
  • Parks and recreation areas
  • Shops
  • Events
  • Public toilets
  • Entertainment venues

That could be especially useful for families, tourists or business travellers unfamiliar with smaller towns.

What this means for Australia’s EV industry

Tools like EVenturemap may become just as important as chargers themselves.

One of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in Australia remains confidence around regional travel. By making charging easier to find and more useful once drivers arrive, NSW is helping remove a psychological barrier many buyers still have.

It also creates a new economic opportunity for regional communities. EV drivers typically spend 20 to 40 minutes charging, creating a valuable window for cafés, retailers and tourism operators.

If successful, similar platforms could be adopted by other states, helping Australia move from simply building chargers to creating a smarter national EV travel network.
