Key Points

  • Nissan's Navara Pro PHEV is due in Australia in 2027
  • The plug in hybrid ute targets 300kW, 800Nm and 3500kg towing
  • Battery capacity, electric range, pricing and final specifications remain unconfirmed

Nissan is preparing to enter Australia's plug in hybrid ute market with a new Navara Pro PHEV, combining a turbocharged petrol engine with electric assistance to deliver a preliminary 300kW and 800Nm.

Expected to arrive in 2027, the new dual cab will be Nissan Australia's first plug in hybrid and the brand's first electrified ute globally. It will also bring serious work credentials, with a targeted 3500kg braked towing capacity and payload of around 1000kg.

Australia and New Zealand will be the first right hand drive markets to receive the model. Unlike the previously announced global version, the local vehicle will use a larger 2.0 litre turbo petrol engine, following development work focused on Australian driving and working conditions.

Power, Towing And Off Road Ability

The Navara Pro PHEV pairs a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine with a high output electric motor integrated into an eight speed automatic transmission. Nissan initially evaluated a smaller 1.5 litre plug in hybrid setup, but selected the larger engine for Australia and New Zealand after testing its performance under load.

The combined output is expected to reach 300kW and 800Nm. These figures are preliminary and remain subject to final homologation, but they would give the electrified Navara substantial power for highway driving, overtaking and hauling heavy loads.

Nissan is also aiming to retain the capabilities expected of a working ute. The Navara Pro PHEV will feature a mechanical four wheel drive system and differential locks, with targeted figures including:

  • Towing: Up to 3500kg braked
  • Payload: Approximately 1000kg
  • Drive modes: Eco, Standard, Sport and Slippery
  • Terrain settings: Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading and Expert

The seven terrain settings are designed to adapt the vehicle to different surfaces and conditions, from loose sand to rocky tracks and water crossings.

The ute will also offer vehicle to load functionality, allowing its battery to power compatible electrical equipment. This could be useful for tradies running tools at remote worksites or campers powering equipment away from mains electricity.

However, Nissan has yet to reveal the battery capacity or the distance the Navara Pro PHEV can travel using electric power alone. Those details will help determine how useful its plug in hybrid system will be for everyday commuting and short work trips.

Australian Testing Shapes The Ute

Nissan has undertaken local development to help ensure the Navara Pro PHEV can handle Australian conditions, rather than simply adapting an overseas model for local sale.

The first prototypes arrived in Australia in 2025. Since then, five development vehicles have covered more than 20,000km as engineers assessed the ute across a range of driving and working scenarios.

Testing has included suspension performance, tyre selection, driver assistance systems, differential locks, towing and payload performance. These areas are particularly important for Australian buyers who use their utes for work during the week and towing or off road travel on weekends.

Nissan has also evaluated both leaf spring and multi link coil spring rear suspension arrangements. The final configuration for Australia has not yet been confirmed.

Most PHEV Owners Actually Plug In, Just Not in Europe

The testing programme reflects the challenge of combining a plug in hybrid powertrain with the demands of a traditional ute. Adding an electric motor and battery brings the potential for lower fuel use on suitable trips, but the vehicle must still deliver the towing, payload and durability expected by local owners.

Nissan has not yet released the final Australian equipment list or confirmed all local specifications. Those details are expected closer to the Navara Pro PHEV's 2027 launch.

What This Means For Australia

The Navara Pro PHEV will enter a market where buyers increasingly have to weigh fuel costs against the practical requirements of a work vehicle. A plug in hybrid ute could offer electric driving for shorter trips while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys and heavy duty use.

Its towing target of 3500kg is particularly significant. Buyers who regularly tow trailers, boats or caravans will want to know whether the electrified powertrain can maintain its performance under load, while the final payload figure will matter to tradespeople carrying tools and equipment.

Vehicle to load capability could provide another practical benefit for people working or camping away from a power outlet. However, the real world value of the plug in hybrid system will depend heavily on the battery size, electric only range, charging capability and fuel consumption figures Nissan is yet to disclose.

Australia and New Zealand will be the first right hand drive markets to receive the Navara Pro PHEV, giving the region an early role in Nissan's electrification strategy. The model is scheduled to arrive in 2027, with pricing and final specifications still to come.

For Australian buyers, the key question will be whether Nissan can combine the running cost benefits of plug in hybrid technology with the towing, payload and off road ability expected of a Navara.
