New Government Mapping Tool Set to Boost EV Charging Rollout

Comments

The Australian government has launched a new digital tool aimed at helping expand the country’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network more strategically and efficiently. Known as the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) mapping tool, the platform is now available via the newly introduced EV.gov.au website.

This initiative is part of a broader push to improve access to EV chargers and support the growing demand for clean transport across the nation.

Smarter Planning for a Faster Rollout

The EVCI mapping tool gives planners and charging providers better visibility on where to place EV fast chargers. It offers open access to a wide range of local data, including EV ownership rates, road traffic volumes, availability of amenities (like public toilets and shops), electricity infrastructure, and mobile signal coverage.

This data-driven approach is designed to speed up network expansion and ensure that new charging stations are built where they’re most useful, both for drivers and the grid.

Federal Minister for Climate and Energy Chris Bowen said the new tools will help Australia meet its EV targets with smarter investment decisions.

“We are making sure that EV chargers are in the right place so drivers can be on the move, hassle free,” said Mr Bowen. “There’s much more to do, but these tools are part of how we work together with states and industry to get on with the job.”

EV.gov.au: A Central Hub for Consumers and Industry

Alongside the mapping tool, the government has launched the EV.gov.au website. The platform is intended to become a central resource for Australians looking to understand EVs from how to buy and charge them, to which rebates and programs are available.

It’s being developed as a single destination for all EV-related information, bringing together insights from government, industry experts, and academic research.

EV Uptake Continues to Rise

According to the federal government, Australia now has over 300,000 electric vehicles on the road. EVs (including plug-in hybrids) account for 15% of new car sales, a record figure that highlights the growing shift toward cleaner transport.

This momentum has created an urgent need for more reliable and accessible charging infrastructure across both urban and regional Australia. The EVCI tool and EV.gov.au aim to help address this gap, making it easier for public and private sectors to work together in scaling the national EV network.
