MG4 EV Essence 64 vs MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 Comparison

MG now sells two small electric hatchbacks that share a name but are quite different inside. The MG4 EV Essence 64 is the rear-wheel drive original, recently updated for 2026 with a lower price and a redesigned cabin. The MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 is a newer, front-wheel drive model that undercuts it on price but not, surprisingly, on size.

Both are aimed at buyers cross-shopping the BYD Dolphin, GWM Ora and GAC Aion UT. Here is how the two MG4 variants compare on price, size, range, charging, features and warranty, so you can work out which one actually suits you.

Pricing

Both models are currently on special. The MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 is priced from $34,990 drive-away. The MG4 EV Essence 64 sits $5,000 above it, from $39,990 drive-away. Both prices include 12 months registration, CTP and stamp duty as part of MG's drive-away offer, and both are the sole Essence-grade variant in their respective ranges (the Essence 64 is joined only by the dearer, dual-motor XPOWER).

The Essence 64 costs more, but it also brings a bigger battery, more power and more range. Whether that $5,000 gap is worth paying depends on how much range and rear-drive dynamics actually matter for your driving.

Dimensions and Size

This is where the MG4 name gets confusing. The Urban Essence 54 is the cheaper, shorter-range car of the two, but it is built on a newer, larger platform than the standard MG4. It is longer, wider, taller and rides on a longer wheelbase than the Essence 64.

In practice, the Urban Essence 54's longer wheelbase is aimed at rear legroom and cabin space rather than outright boot volume, though it still out-carries the Essence 64 on paper by 32 litres with the seats up.

Range and Performance

The Essence 64's rear-wheel drive motor produces 140kW and 350Nm, good for a claimed 7.5-second 0-100km/h sprint and 452km on the WLTP combined cycle. The Urban Essence 54's front-mounted motor is considerably softer, at 118kW and 250Nm, with a claimed 8.7-second 0-100km/h time and 405km of WLTP range.

The two cars feel different to drive, too. The Essence 64 uses MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear, with 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive giving it light, keen steering; it is unanimously rated as genuinely fun car to drive. The Urban Essence 54 uses a simpler front-wheel drive layout with a torsion-beam rear, chosen for packaging and cost over dynamics. We haven't tested it yet, but on paper it favours comfort and efficiency over the driver engagement the rear-wheel srive MG4 EV is known for.

Whichever variant you land on, you'll be buying into Australia's best-selling small EV nameplate above $45,000.

Battery and Charging

Both cars use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which means owners can charge to 100 per cent daily without the long-term degradation concerns that come with some nickel-based batteries. The Essence 64's larger 64kWh pack is the bigger factor behind its range advantage, rather than any efficiency difference between the two.

Driver Technology and Infotainment

The updated Essence 64 now runs a 12.8-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, both larger than the units they replace, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and MG's iSMART connectivity app. The Urban Essence 54 is built around a similar modern infotainment layout, with wireless smartphone mirroring standard, though its screen sizes have not been confirmed to match the updated Essence 64's specification.

Both cars carry MG Pilot driver assistance, covering adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and blind spot detection, along with MG's now-common physical climate control switches, a change from the menu-based system on earlier MG4 models.

Other Features

Both variants include vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, letting owners run camping gear, power tools or small appliances directly off the car's battery. Both ride on similarly sized alloy wheels and get a five-star safety rating, though via different authorities: the Essence 64 carries an ANCAP rating, while the MG4 EV Urban was awarded five stars by Euro NCAP before also being confirmed with a five-star ANCAP rating locally.

Both cars share MG's 500kg braked and unbraked towing capacity, and both come standard with a portable Level 1 charging cable. Colour palettes differ slightly between the two ranges, with the Essence 64 gaining three new hues at its 2026 update: Iris Cyan, Sterling Silver and Piccadilly Blue.

Warranty and Servicing

MG backs both cars with the same warranty structure: seven years and unlimited kilometres as standard, extending to 10 years and 250,000km if the car is serviced on schedule at an MG dealer. Battery cover on the Urban Essence 54 is specified at seven years or 150,000km; MG's battery warranty terms for the Essence 64 should be confirmed with a dealer before purchase, as we could not verify an updated figure for the 2026 model.

Verdict

The MG4 EV Urban Essence 54 makes the strongest case as a value proposition. It is $5,000 cheaper, physically larger inside, still backed by MG's full warranty and safety credentials, and only gives up meaningful ground on straight-line performance and DC charging speed.

The Essence 64 earns its premium with a bigger battery, more range, quicker acceleration and the more engaging rear-wheel drive layout the original MG4 built its reputation on. If range anxiety or driving enjoyment matter more to you than the sharpest price, it remains the better buy of the two.
