  • The U9 EV has a 430km WLTP range, 325kW of power and a 3500kg braked towing capacity from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain.

MG Motor Australia has revealed full specifications for the MG U9 EV, an all-electric version of its existing diesel ute. MG says Australia will be the first market in the world to get the U9 EV.

The U9 EV pairs a 3500kg braked towing capacity with a 430km WLTP driving range and a 5.8 second 0-100km/h time. It becomes the third all-electric ute on sale in Australia, joining the KGM Musso EV and the incoming Toyota HiLux BEV. MG has not yet confirmed pricing or an on-sale date for the U9 EV.

Powertrain, Performance and Range

The U9 EV uses a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with two electric motors. Combined, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup produces 325kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

MG quotes a 0-100km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a WLTP driving range of 430km. The vehicle also runs full-function four-wheel Electronic Air Suspension.

The U9 EV has a 3500kg braked towing capacity and a 750kg unbraked rating, enough for a caravan, boat or trailer. Payload is rated at 685kg. The tub is sized to fit a standard pallet, and there is a 236-litre frunk under the bonnet for extra storage.

It also has 6.6kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability through an external CCS2 outlet, plus three 2.2kW outlets inside the cabin for running tools or appliances.

MG U9 EV charge port

The U9 EV supports 11kW AC charging. On a DC fast charger, it can go from 20 to 80 per cent in about 42 minutes at up to 115kW.

Built on the Same Platform as the LDV Terron 9

The MG U9 EV shares its underlying platform with the LDV Terron 9. Both MG and LDV are owned by Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, and the platform is offered with either a diesel or an electric powertrain across the two brands. LDV sells the Terron 9 (diesel) and eTerron 9 (electric), while MG sells the U9 (diesel) and now the U9 EV.

MG already sells the diesel U9 in Australia, with Explore, Explore X and Explore Pro variants priced from $52,990 to $60,990 drive-away. The U9 EV adds a fully electric option to that range for the first time.

Third Electric Ute to Reach Australia

The U9 EV becomes the third all-electric ute available in Australia, joining the KGM Musso EV and the Toyota HiLux BEV. Other utes, including the BYD Shark 6, offer electrified power but use a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric powertrain.
