MG Motor Australia has opened reservations for its new IM range, marking a significant step forward in premium electric vehicle technology. The IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV models represent the brand's collaboration with technology giants including SAIC Motor and Alibaba Group.

Drive-away pricing begins at $60,990 for both models, with three variants available across the range. Customers can place reservation orders through MG Motor's online platform from today.
The IM brand, which stands for Intelligence in Motion, will be marketed as IM Presented by MG Motor in Australia.
Both vehicles were previewed at the Melbourne Motor Show in April, generating considerable interest ahead of this official launch.

Peter Ciao, Chief Executive Officer of MG Motor Australia, remarked: "We are now pleased to introduce IM Presented by MG Motor to the Australian market, following its successful preview at the Melbourne Motor show in April. The IM5 and IM6 will deliver the most innovative, AI inspired, cutting-edge features, and high performance, blended seamlessly with premium design and interior finishes."
Revolutionary Bi-Directional Turning
The standout feature of both models is their advanced rear-wheel steering system, offering up to 12 degrees of articulation. This technology significantly reduces the turning circle, making these large vehicles as manoeuvrable as compact hatchbacks in tight spaces.
At higher speeds, the rear wheels work in harmony with the front wheels to improve stability and cornering performance. The system's effectiveness was demonstrated when the IM5 achieved a Moose Test record of 91km/h, surpassing a 25-year-old benchmark.
One-Touch AI Chauffeur System
The AI chauffeur system incorporates four key automated parking and manoeuvring functions. Auto park handles both parallel parking and 90-degree parking manoeuvres without driver input, while one-touch pullout prepares the vehicle for immediate departure when owners return to their parked car.
One-touch reverse represents a particularly sophisticated feature for challenging driving situations. When drivers find themselves stuck in narrow spaces or dead-end alleys, the system can reverse the vehicle up to 100 metres while precisely retracing the original driving path.
Crab Mode Manoeuvring
Both the IM5 and IM6 feature a unique crab mode function that enables diagonal movement at low speeds. This capability allows the rear wheels to rotate in the same direction as the front wheels, enabling the vehicle to move sideways or diagonally.
The crab mode function proves particularly useful in tight parking situations or when precise positioning is required. This feature represents an extension of the bi-directional steering system's capabilities beyond conventional driving scenarios.
High Performance Powertrain
Both models utilise an 800V Hurricane motor system for rapid acceleration and performance in the mid spec Platinum and top spec Performance. The base Premium spec has 400V architecture.
The flagship IM5 100kWh all-wheel-drive variant achieves 0-100km/h acceleration in just 3.2 seconds.
The high-voltage architecture enables faster charging capabilities across the range. Both models can charge from 30-80% capacity (Platinum and Performance spec) in 15 minutes using appropriate DC fast-charging infrastructure.
These spec levels can charge at up to 396kW rate, which is not available in Australia yet. There are a few public DC 350kW chargers in Australia but they are not common.
Premium Interior Features
The cabin design prioritises technology integration and passenger comfort. A 10.5-inch central touchscreen manages vehicle functions, while a 26.3-inch infotainment display provides entertainment and information services.
Both models feature panoramic sunroofs, premium seat finishes, and smart device magnetic mounting systems. The audio experience comes from a 20-speaker high-definition sound system throughout the cabin.
AI Technology Integration
Advanced artificial intelligence features include Rainy Night Mode and One Touch AI Chauffeur functions. These systems utilise 360-degree cameras to assist drivers or perform specific tasks automatically.
The vehicles integrate with MG's iSMART mobile application for remote monitoring and control. Owners can check vehicle location, monitor charging status, and plan routes through their smartphone.
Battery Range and Charging
The IM5 sedan offers 490-655km WLTP range, while the IM6 SUV provides 450-555km WLTP range. Real-world performance will vary depending on driving conditions, weather and how hard drivers accelerate.
Pricing and Availability
Three variants are available for each model:
Premium (75kWh RWD) $60,990 drive-away price for both IM5 and IM6
Platinum (100kWh RWD) $69,990 drive-away price for both IM5 and IM6
Performance (100kWh AWD) $80,990 drive-away price for both IM5 and IM6
All models include a seven-year comprehensive warranty when serviced within the IM dealer network.
Customers interested in securing their position in the delivery queue can place reservation orders through MG Motor's online platform.
Specific delivery timeframes have not been announced, though the company expects to begin deliveries later this year.
