Geely EX5 Gets 245kW RWD and 6C Charging in China Update

Geely has launched an updated version of its EX5 electric SUV in China, where it is sold as the Galaxy E5. The new model went on sale on 23 September 2026 in five variants, priced from 97,800 yuan (about US$14,400) to 137,800 yuan (about US$20,300).

The biggest changes are in the drivetrain. Most variants move from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, gain a 245kW motor and switch to an 800V platform with 6C fast charging. Depending on the battery this is a maximum output of between 360kW to 380 kW.

The update is particularly relevant to Australia because the EX5 is Geely's best-selling model here, and it now faces two new rivals priced within a few hundred dollars of it along with advantages in key areas.

Price and Variants in China

The updated EX5 is offered in five trim levels in China. The entry-level Global Classic keeps front-wheel drive and a 400V system. The four Smart Charging variants use rear-wheel drive and an 800V architecture.

Rear-Wheel Drive and a 245kW Motor

The four Smart Charging variants use a single rear-mounted motor producing 245kW (329hp). That is 85kW (114hp) more than the previous model.

The entry-level front-wheel-drive variant keeps the existing 160kW motor. This is the same output as the EX5 currently sold in Australia.

Moving the motor to the rear frees up space under the bonnet. The new EX5 gains a 160-litre front boot, which the previous model did not have.

Fast Charging and a New Battery

The updated EX5 uses Geely's new Aegis Golden Brick short-blade battery. It comes in three sizes: 60.22kWh, 61.52kWh and 70.01kWh.

These deliver claimed ranges of 530km, 550km and 635km on China's CLTC test cycle, this equates to 429km, 446km and 514km respectively on the WLTP cycle.

The Smart Charging variants support 6C charging, which Geely calls Smart Charging. A 6C rating means the battery can accept charge at up to six times its capacity per hour. Real-world speeds depend on the charger, expect peak output in the range of 360kW to 400 kW.

Smart charging is a response to BYD's Flash Charging and others such as Xpeng and Zeekr. The EX5 will take around nine minutes to reach 80 per cent.

Design and Dimensions

The new EX5 keeps the closed grille and slim headlights of the current model. The front bumper has been revised with matte chrome accents and a more aggressive lower lip.

Other exterior changes include fender-mounted cameras, privacy glass on the rear windows and traditional door handles in place of the previous flush units. Buyers can choose 18-inch or 19-inch wheels. The top variant adds a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

The rear-wheel-drive models measure 4,630mm long, 1,920mm wide and 1,670mm tall, on a 2,745mm wheelbase. The front-wheel-drive entry model measures 4,615mm long, 1,901mm wide and 1,670mm tall, with a 2,750mm wheelbase.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the cabin has a 15.4-inch 2.5K floating touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Geely has fitted a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel and a new crystal-style gear selector.

The Flyme Auto 2 system runs the infotainment. Other features include a head-up display, a 540-degree transparent chassis camera view, four-zone voice control, 50W wireless phone charging and zero-gravity front passenger seats.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The updated EX5 adds Geely's G-Pilot H5 driver assistance system, known in China as Qianli Haohan. With LiDAR fitted, it supports navigate on autopilot on city streets and highways, memory parking and fingertip parking.

The body has a torsional rigidity of 36,000Nm per degree and uses 1,500MPa hot-formed steel. The battery pack has a bulletproof coating. A tyre blowout stability system is designed to keep the car under control at up to 160km/h in a straight line and 120km/h through corners.

How It Compares to the EX5 Sold in Australia

The EX5 currently sold in Australia is the Extended Range model, which reached showrooms in March 2026. It uses a 68.39kWh LFP battery and a front-mounted 160kW and 320Nm motor. It is offered in Complete and Inspire grades, priced at $41,990 and $45,990 before on-road costs.

The new model's largest battery offers more WLTP range than the current Australian car, at up to 514km against 475km. The bigger gains are in power and charging. Peak power rises by 85kW, and the 6C rating is a large step up from the Australian car's 100kW DC charging, which takes about 20 minutes from 30 to 80 per cent.

EX5 Sales in Australia in 2026

The EX5 has been one of Australia's best-selling EVs in 2026. In August, the EX5 added 1,947 sales and was again the third best-selling EV, behind the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7. That puts its 2026 total at more than 10,000 sales, based on CarsGuide's July figure plus August sales.

For context, the EX5 recorded 3,944 deliveries in 2025, after local sales began in March that year.

New Rivals: BYD Atto 3 Evo and XPeng L03

Two new rivals now sit at almost the same price as the EX5. Both offer faster charging than the current Australian EX5.

The BYD Atto 3 Evo went on sale in August, with deliveries from September. It starts at $41,990 before on-road costs, the same as the EX5 Complete. The Premium variant at $46,990 adds rear-wheel drive, a 230kW motor, an 800V system and 220kW DC charging.

The XPeng L03 was priced for Australia in September. It starts at $41,900 before on-road costs, $90 less than the EX5. Every battery-electric L03 variant charges at 193kW or more, and first deliveries are expected from November 2026.

On paper, the current EX5 trails both rivals on DC charging speed. It also trails the rear-drive Atto 3 Evo Premium and all L03 variants on power. Its WLTP range of up to 475km sits between the two Atto 3 Evo variants.

Is the New EX5 Coming to Australia?

Geely Auto Australia has not confirmed the updated EX5 for local sale. It has not announced pricing or timing.

Competition may force the issue. The Atto 3 Evo and L03 are likely to put pressure on EX5 sales. If that happens, Geely would likely need to launch the updated model here to stay competitive.

We expect Geely to review local EX5 sales across Q4 2026 and Q1 2027 before making a decision. On that basis, Q3 2027 is the most likely launch window if the car is confirmed.

That timing would roughly follow the last update. The EX5 Extended Range was first reported overseas in May 2025 and reached Australian showrooms about 10 months later, in March 2026.
