EV drivers travelling Australia's busiest interstate route can expect significant improvements to charging infrastructure at two crucial locations, with NRMA announcing major upgrades to their Gundagai and Goulburn fast charging sites along the Hume Highway.

Thankfully by coincidence Tesla is opening two new big Supercharger locations nearby which means there won't be charger availability anxiety while the NRMA locations are upgraded.

At Goulburn NRMA has already replaced problematic older chargers with a brand-new 50kW unit, with industry sources suggesting a complete charger replacement program is likely for this location.

The NRMA has confirmed that its Gundagai charging site will temporarily close from Monday, August 18, 2025, as the organisation works to secure a nearby alternative location.

NRMA Gundagai

The company aims to have a new site near the original Gundagai location operational by early 2026, ensuring continued coverage at this strategic stopover point between Sydney, Albury and Melbourne.

Two New Tesla Supercharger Sites Step In To Save The Day

However, EV drivers should not be concerned about service disruptions during these upgrade periods, thanks to Tesla's recent massive infrastructure investment along the Hume Highway corridor.

Tesla has just opened Australia's largest electric vehicle charging site at Goulburn, featuring 20 high-speed V4 Supercharger stalls located near the famous Big Merino landmark.

The facility is open to all CCS2-compatible electric vehicles, not just Teslas, making it accessible to the majority of electric cars on Australian roads.

The new Goulburn Tesla Supercharger site offers competitive pricing of $0.52 per kWh (for $9.99 monthly paid members) and $0.73 for casual use.

For the Gundagai area, relief is also on the horizon. Tesla is expected to soon activate a new 12-charger site at the Coolac Hotel, located just 12 kilometres from Gundagai.

Both charging sites are co-funded by the NSW government and are open to non-Tesla EVs as part of that funding deal. Reports indicate that the Coolac Hotel chargers were installed by late June and remain plastic-wrapped, likely awaiting final grid connection and activation.

The Tesla sites are part of a broader NSW government initiative that required Tesla to grant access to many of its new Superchargers to non-Tesla electric vehicles as a condition of state co-funding.

Tesla's rapid expansion ensures that the critical Sydney-Melbourne corridor maintains robust charging infrastructure during the NRMA site transition period for Gundagai and Goulburn.

The timing couldn't be better for the growing number of Australian EV owners who rely on this route for both business travel and holiday road trips.

Industry observers note that having multiple charging network operators at key locations significantly reduces range anxiety and provides important redundancy for long-distance EV travel.

The combination of upgraded NRMA facilities and new high-capacity Tesla sites represents a major step forward for electric vehicle infrastructure along Australia's most important interstate highway.

For current EV drivers planning Hume Highway journeys, checking charging app status before departure remains advisable during this infrastructure transition period.
