BYD Unveils New Plug-in Hybrid Sedans With Over 2000 km of Range

Comments

BYD has revealed a new fuel-efficient hybrid system for their Qin L and Seal 06 sedans in China. Both cars use BYD's new fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid system.

BYD claims these plug-in-hybrid sedans can travel over 2,000 km on a full tank and charged battery. This would be enough to travel from Melbourne to Brisbane on a single charge and tank of petrol.

Both models come in the same drivetrain configuration, have similar dimensions but are differentiated by their design language.

The longest range model offers 120 km of electric-only driving, while a more affordable option goes for 80 km. Both come with front-wheel drive and automatic transmission. Prices start at around A$21,100 (US$13,750) for the shorter-range models in China.

BYD Qin L DM-i

The Qin L embraces the "national wave dragon face" design language, a signature style within BYD's Dynasty series. This translates to a bold front end featuring the character "Qin" prominently displayed and underscored by a chrome bar. A large grille sits below, and unlike many modern cars, the Qin L retains traditional door handles for a familiar touch. The side profile is accentuated by a strong waistline that flows from the front fenders to the rear doors. The taillights complete the design with a unique, unified flow inspired by traditional Chinese knots.

  • Available in five trims, priced from US$13,750 to US$19,300.
  • Slightly larger than the Seal 06 DM-i, with a spacious interior featuring a mix of physical buttons and touchscreens.
  • Offers an all-electric range of 80km or 120km depending on the battery size.
  • Boasts an impressive combined driving range of up to 2,100 km.

BYD Seal 06 DM-i

The Seal 06 departs from the Qin L's aesthetics, drawing inspiration from BYD's Ocean series. It shares the Seal name, which debuted in 2022, and reflects that influence. The front features a minimalist look with a mostly closed grille positioned low on the fascia. The door handles are a unique touch, blending functionality with a semi-hidden design. The rear boasts a striking through taillight cluster that stretches across the trunk lid. Adding a touch of elegance, the BYD logo illuminates at night.

BYD's DMI-i Hybrid Technology Explained

The DMi-i is a variation of a PHEV technology which can operate in three power supply modes:

  • Pure EV Mode - In Pure EV Mode, the wheels are 100% driven by the electric motor for an all-electric drive experience, with the engine on standby.
  • HEV Series Mode - When the battery falls below a set state-of-charge, the engine acts as a generator charging the battery, the wheels are driven by the electric motor, making HEV mode the ideal companion for extending range.
  • HEV Parallel Mode - The wheels are driven by both the electric motor and the engine.

On average BYD claim the car will be powered by the electric motor in 90% of driving conditions.
