BYD Shark 6 Range Expands to Three Models: Cab-Chassis and Performance Arrive

BYD Australia has expanded the Shark 6 lineup from one model to three. The Dynamic Cab-Chassis is on sale now, and the Performance arrives in May 2026. The existing Premium pickup carries over unchanged at $57,900 before on-road costs.

All prices are before on-road costs. Pricing for the optional heavy-duty alloy tray for the cab-chassis is still to be confirmed.

What Changed Between Old and New

The original Shark 6 launched with one variant, the Premium pickup. The expanded range adds two new models and a more powerful engine option. Here is what changed.

How It Compares to the Competition

The Shark 6 Performance now matches the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV on towing capacity at 3,500kg. Here is how the three compare across key specs.

Sales Performance

BYD sold 18,073 Sharks in 2025. That made it Australia's 18th best-selling vehicle overall. It outsold every other ute except the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton. By comparison, the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV sold 1,371 units and the Ford Ranger PHEV sold 1,143 units in the same period.

Powertrain and Performance

All three Shark 6 variants use BYD's Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) AWD system. A turbocharged petrol engine works with front and rear electric motors. Power comes from a 29.58kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery.

The Dynamic Cab-Chassis and Premium share the 1.5-litre turbo setup: 321kW, 650Nm and a 5.7-second 0-100km/h time. The Performance steps up to a 2.0-litre turbo with 350kW, 700Nm and a 5.5-second sprint.

Three Driving Modes

The DM Super Hybrid system has three modes that switch automatically:

EV Pure Electric Mode: the petrol engine is off. The car runs on battery power only. Best for city driving and short trips.

HEV Series Mode: the petrol engine generates electricity for the motors but does not drive the wheels directly. Good for medium speeds.

HEV Parallel Mode: the petrol engine and electric motors drive the wheels together. Used for towing and highway speeds. The engine can also charge the battery at the same time.

Off-Road Capability

All Shark 6 variants have Mountain Mode, which manages traction and braking on slopes and uneven ground. The Performance adds Crawl Mode, which caps speed at 20km/h and continuously adjusts torque to stop the wheels slipping on rocks, steep climbs and deep ruts.

Crawl Mode will be offered to Dynamic and Premium owners via an over-the-air update later in 2026.

Suspension and Ride

All Shark 6 models use double-wishbone independent suspension front and rear. This is uncommon in a ute and helps with both ride comfort and handling. The Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) Blade Battery integration also improves torsional stiffness and reduces noise and vibration.

The Cab-Chassis and Tray Option

The Dynamic Cab-Chassis is aimed at trade and fleet buyers. It uses the same 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain as the Premium and supports up to 2,500kg braked towing.

An optional heavy-duty alloy tray is available, designed and made by Ironman 4x4. It has eight tie-down points, two lockable storage boxes and an optional trundle tray. Pricing for the tray is still to be confirmed. It will be sold through BYD dealerships.

The cab-chassis uses a 12.8-inch infotainment screen, compared to the 15.6-inch screen in the Premium and Performance.

Power and Technology

All Shark 6 variants have 6.6kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. There is one 230V outlet in the cabin and three in the tub. A V2L adaptor adds two more sockets. This lets you run tools, appliances and camping gear from the vehicle.

Safety is covered by a full ADAS suite with 360-degree active safety features and a 360-degree camera. All variants have a five-star ANCAP rating. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Availability

The Shark 6 Dynamic Cab-Chassis is on sale now. The Shark 6 Performance arrives in May 2026. Buyers can register their interest on the BYD Australia website. The Shark 6 Premium continues unchanged.
