BYD has launched a new flagship electric sedan in China that combines more than 1,000km of claimed range with ultra-fast charging, potentially setting a new benchmark for the brand’s luxury EVs.
Called the Da Han, the large electric sedan was officially launched at the Chengdu Auto Show in China, where a red example was displayed with a LiDAR sensor mounted at the front.
The new model is positioned as a premium, long-distance EV for buyers who want luxury without spending extended periods at charging stations.
One of its biggest selling points is BYD's latest Flash Charging technology. The company claims the Da Han can charge from 10 to 70 per cent in just five minutes, while a 10 to 97 per cent charge takes nine minutes.
That makes charging times comparable with or potentially shorter than a conventional fuel stop.
1,000km range meets five-minute charging
The Da Han's headline range comes from a 102kWh Blade Battery using lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
BYD claims a maximum driving range of 1,008km under the CLTC testing cycle. While CLTC figures are generally more optimistic than the WLTP standard used in Australia, the figure could translate to more than 750km of WLTP range if the vehicle were tested under that cycle.
The battery will be available across both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.
BYD's Flash Charging technology is arguably just as significant as the range figure. The company claims:

The technology could make long-distance EV travel considerably easier if the required high-powered charging infrastructure is available.

The Da Han is also a substantial performance sedan, measuring 5.26 metres long and weighing more than 2.5 tonnes.
Despite its size, BYD has fitted the flagship with rear-wheel steering to improve manoeuvrability on tighter roads and in urban environments.

Inside, BYD has equipped the Da Han with multiple displays, including a large central touchscreen similar to those used across the company's higher-end models.
A 31-speaker sound system is also fitted, further reinforcing the sedan's luxury positioning.
The combination of long range, high power and rapid charging is aimed at buyers who may use the vehicle for both family travel and executive transport.
Could the Da Han come to Australia?
There is currently no confirmation that the Da Han will be sold in Australia.
The sedan has only just launched in China, with customer deliveries expected to begin in the coming weeks. BYD has not announced Australian pricing, specifications or an export timeline.
However, the company's growing international presence means an eventual export cannot be ruled out.
The Da Han could also benefit from the interest generated by its SUV sibling, the Da Tang. Earlier this year, the SUV reportedly attracted more than 30,000 orders in its first 24 hours, demonstrating the appetite for BYD's larger premium vehicles in China.
If BYD eventually brings the Da Han to Australia, its combination of a huge battery, more than 1,000km of claimed Chinese-market range and five-minute charging could make it a particularly interesting rival to large premium electric sedans.
For now, though, the Da Han remains a China-market flagship, with any Australian launch still unconfirmed.
