Australian-Built Electric Mini Moke Launched

Comments

A piece of Australian motoring nostalgia has just received an electric makeover. Melbourne-based EV conversion firm Jaunt Motors is now offering a street-legal, all-electric version of the iconic Mini Moke, but it comes with a premium price tag.

Aimed at both individual buyers and specialist workshops, this locally developed electric Moke conversion has been engineered from the ground up to comply with Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and is now available for pre-order. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2026.

A Premium Rebuild with Local Compliance

Jaunt Motors is well known for converting classics like the Land Rover Defender and Mini Cooper. Their new electric Moke offering follows the same philosophy: preserving vintage charm while updating everything else for modern standards.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the offering:

The 19kWh battery is mounted under the tub, and thanks to the Moke’s naturally low kerb weight, the electric version remains a four-seater without exceeding GVM limits. A single gear ratio (7.8:1) paired with larger 13-inch wheels gives it responsive, nimble driving dynamics, true to the spirit of the original design.

Not Just a Conversion — An Engineered EV Platform

Jaunt isn’t merely swapping out engines. Every component in the electric Moke has been CAD-designed and locally engineered to meet stringent safety and compliance requirements.

The retail package includes:

  • A new subframe for EV components
  • An integrated 12V system
  • Electric parking brake
  • Regenerative braking
  • New centre dash with digital controls
  • Pop-up charging port
  • ADR-compliant seats and seatbelts
  • Redesigned roll bar with canvas top

Steering, braking, and suspension systems are upgraded and can be tailored to customer preferences. A high-spec version, including a stainless-steel body and CNC-machined badging, reportedly offers a better torque-to-weight ratio than a Tesla Model 3 Performance, while remaining lighter than the original petrol Moke.

Conversion Platform for Trade Use

In addition to consumer builds, Jaunt is offering its EV Moke conversion platform to independent restoration shops across Australia. These workshops can purchase the platform from $90,000 AUD (trade price), with training and installation guides included.

This move aims to expand access to compliant, safe electric Moke conversions across the country.

International Competition and Local Advantage

While UK-based Moke International is also producing electric Mokes (priced at around $69,500 AUD, including delivery and registration), these vehicles haven’t yet been approved for Australian roads. The company hopes to gain approval under ultra-low volume vehicle regulations, similar to the EU and US markets.

What’s Next for Jaunt?

Jaunt’s ambitions don’t end with the Moke. The company plans to extend its engineered EV platforms to other classic icons, including:

  • Original Range Rover
  • Volkswagen Kombi
  • Further Porsche and Mini classics

CEO and co-founder Dave Budge says the idea is to make these vehicles not just driveable, but reliable and sustainable for future generations.

“This isn’t about reinventing the car,” Budge says. “It’s about fixing what wasn’t great and preserving what was.”

With the release of this engineered EV platform, Jaunt is offering more than a nostalgic joyride. It’s delivering a fully compliant electric vehicle that retains the spirit of the original Moke while meeting the expectations of the modern Australian driver.
