A Huge EV Charging Upgrade is Coming To Australia

Comments

Australia’s push for widespread electric vehicle adoption is gaining momentum, with a major investment set to expand public charging options.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has pledged $2.4 million to support the rollout of 250 kerbside EV chargers. The charging stations will be installed across more than 60 local government areas in Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia.

This announcement comes at a time when Australia is in dire need of more public EV charging infrastructure with electric vehicle uptake substantially outpacing EV charging infrastructure deployment. According to a recent IEA report Australia has the second worst EV to public EV charge point ratio in the world at 68:1, compared to a global average of 11:1.

Collaboration is key to the project’s success. EVX, in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Futures at UTS, will oversee real-time reporting and work with energy providers such as Ausgrid and Essential Energy to develop flexible tariff structures. Additional support from Endeavour Energy, SA Power Networks, Ausnet, CitiPower, Powercor, and United Energy (CPPCUE) will ensure a smooth implementation process.

Flow Power will serve as the energy retailer for all 250 sites.
Beyond the immediate expansion of charging stations, the initiative will also drive the development of a user-friendly interface through EVX and the EV charging app Wevolt. This integration aims to enhance the customer experience by seamlessly connecting utility systems with the public charging network.

The funding for this initiative is provided under the federal government’s Driving the Nation Program, a scheme designed to accelerate the adoption of cleaner transport solutions.
