Key Points
- Australia first V2G Trial – Origin, BYD, and StarCharge are pioneering bundled EV and bi-directional charging in Australia.
- Energy Sharing – V2G lets cars charge from the grid or solar, and send energy back during peak times.
- Free Charging – Eligible drivers will receive free home charging worth up to 24,000km annually.
- Affordable Access – Subscriptions cost under $800/month after tax, with flexibility and FBT benefits.
- Limited Pilot – The trial starts in 2026 with only 50 places available.
Australia is set to take a bold step forward in electric vehicle innovation, with Origin partnering with BYD and StarCharge to deliver the nation’s first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) subscription trial. The program bundles an EV, a bi-directional charger, and free home charging into one package — marking a potential turning point for how drivers power and use their cars.

A Car That Gives Back to the Grid
Unlike standard EV charging, bi-directional (V2G) technology allows cars not just to take energy from the grid, but to return it when needed. Origin’s Chau Le, General Manager of E-mobility, called the move a “game-changer” that could reward EV drivers for helping stabilise the grid.
Participants will plug in their EVs at home, and Origin’s Virtual Power Plant will automatically manage charging and discharging. The result: free charging at home for up to 24,000km of annual driving.
Based on Electric Vehicle Council estimates, that could save households between $500 and $2,500 a year compared to fueling a petrol car or charging from a standard tariff.

The Trial Offer
Origin’s trial begins in 2026 and is open to just 50 eligible customers. Those selected will receive:
- A BYD Atto 3 on subscription (valued at $39,900 before on-roads)
- A StarCharge V2G Halo charger (worth $6,000)
- Access to Origin’s smart tariff with free charging
The subscription will cost under $800 per month after tax savings. Flexible month-to-month terms allow customers to access benefits like salary packaging and FBT exemption without committing to long leases.

Why It Matters
For BYD, the partnership aligns with its vision of “innovation for a better life,” while StarCharge describes V2G as the moment EVs become “mobile energy assets.”
If successful, the trial could reshape how Australians view EV ownership — moving from simply a transport choice to an integrated role in the energy system.
