RedEarth Energy Storage and ambibox have partnered to manufacture bi-directional V2G/V2H EV chargers in Australia 3 Phase versions are expected to be available by mid 2025. Single phase late 2025.
zecar has covered ambibox V2G/V2H testing in great depth eg:
- BYD Atto 3 Bidirectional Charging (V2H and V2G) Successfully Trialled
- 2024 Tesla Model Y Bidirectional Charging (V2G and V2H) Successfully Trialled
- Volvo EX30 Bidirectional Charging (V2G and V2H) Successfully Trialled
- MG4 Bidirectional Charging (V2H and V2G) Successfully Trialled
Key Features:
- Partnership between RedEarth Energy Storage and ambibox for V2X charger production
- Manufacturing to begin Q2/2025 in Darra, Queensland
- Three-phase charger available Q2/2025, single-phase version in Q4/2025
- Could be compatible with majority of Australian EVs
- Aligns with Australian V2X standards implementation (December 2024).
The chargers will enable vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality, allowing EV owners without solar panels or home batteries to participate in energy trading. This development coincides with Standards Australia's implementation of V2X technology standards in December 2024.
Charles Walker, Co-founder and CEO of RedEarth said
"RedEarth’s partnership with ambibox opens new opportunities for electric vehicle owners to use their EVs as private power plants".
"While rooftop solar and home battery ownership have traditionally been the drivers of the growth of distributed energy resources in Australia, the adoption of EVs has accelerated".
"With the introduction of V2X standards, RedEarth and ambibox will optimise the returns both for EV owners and homeowners with behind the meter assets and we’ll be well placed to serve customers as EV adoption gathers pace".
"Our partnership with ambibox is a significant milestone for RedEarth on many fronts. ambibox has developed a world-class V2X EV charger that fits with RedEarth’s aspirations to lead Australia and New Zealand’s behind the meter optimisation evolution as part of the electrification mega trend".
"We are also delighted to be working with ambibox who have set the global standard for V2X charging".
"RedEarth will be the first Australian EV charger manufacturer to be producing bi-directional chargers locally. In addition, we will pave the way for EV owners to be incentivised with additional revenue streams to power the grid and to reduce their reliance on grid electricity by using RedEarth’s private power plant ecosystem.”
Manfred Przybilla, CEO of ambibox said
"ambibox has invested heavily in developing a world-class V2X solution that is built for the future".
"We are delighted to be working with RedEarth to bring our EV charging solutions to Australia and New Zealand. RedEarth’s vision to deliver a private power plant ecosystem to customers truly aligns with our values and that is to enhance the returns on EVs for both auto manufacturers and their end customers."
Production specifications include three-phase compatible wall chargers, tested with most EVs in the Australian market. The three-phase units will be available in Q2/2025, followed by single-phase versions in Q4/2025.
Market context shows significant EV growth in Australia, with sales increasing from 30,000 in 2022 to 90,000 in 2023, representing 8% of new car purchases. Projections suggest over 100,000 new EVs in 2024, indicating substantial market potential for V2X chargers.
RedEarth, established in 2013, manufactures energy storage solutions in Brisbane, focusing on residential and commercial applications within their private power plant ecosystem.
