Key Points

  • Aussie EV switchers could save $76 million on fuel this year
  • Electric Car Discount buyers could save $103.6 million annually.
  • Strong EV sales highlight Australia's accelerating electric vehicle transition.

Australians who switched to an electric vehicle during the first half of 2026 could collectively save around $76 million on fuel by the end of the year, according to new figures from the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA).

The estimate comes as petrol and diesel prices surged following the war in Iran, giving motorists another financial reason to consider moving away from internal-combustion vehicles.

But the savings could extend well beyond 2026.

NALSPA says Australians who bought a battery-electric vehicle through the federal government's Electric Car Discount between January and June could save a combined $103.6 million every year from 2027 onwards, provided fuel prices remain around their current levels.

The figures add another dimension to Australia's accelerating EV transition, with motorists increasingly looking at electric cars not only as a way to reduce emissions, but also to cut their exposure to volatile fuel prices.

EV switchers could save $76 million this year

The $76 million estimate covers Australians who made the switch to an EV during the first six months of 2026.

For many buyers, the timing of the switch coincided with a sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices linked to the conflict in Iran and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

Although a memorandum of understanding signed in June resulted in a temporary ceasefire, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has remained effectively closed. Recent attacks have also pushed oil prices higher, suggesting fuel-price pressure could continue.

That makes the running-cost advantage of an EV particularly relevant for Australian households already dealing with higher living costs.

NALSPA estimates that the savings will become even more significant for those who continue driving their EVs into 2027 and beyond.

Electric Car Discount buyers could save $103.6 million a year

The bigger figure is the projected $103.6 million in annual fuel savings from 2027.

This applies to Australians who purchased a battery-electric vehicle under the federal government's Electric Car Discount scheme between January and June 2026. The estimate assumes fuel costs remain at current levels.

The leasing industry's assessment comes as Australia's EV market continues to expand, with the financial case for electric cars becoming more compelling as petrol prices fluctuate.

NALSPA chief executive Rohan Martin said the benefits extend beyond simply reducing household fuel bills.

“These savings mean more money stays in local economies instead of flowing to overseas energy suppliers,” Martin said.

He also argued that putting more money back into household budgets could help Australians deal with everyday expenses during the ongoing cost-of-living squeeze.

According to Martin, the broader shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles could also put downward pressure on inflation while improving Australia's energy security.

August 2026 EV Sales: Tesla Leads BEV Sales, Up 170% YoY

What does this mean for Australia's EV market?

The latest savings figures arrive as EV sales continue to show strong momentum in Australia.

Data from the Electric Vehicle Council showed Tesla and Polestar delivered a combined 7,821 battery-electric vehicles in August, representing a 148 per cent increase compared with August 2025.

It was the second-highest monthly result recorded for the two brands, behind only the 8,924 vehicles delivered in June.

The August result also marked another month in which EVs accounted for more than one-fifth of Australia's new-car market, according to The Driven's analysis of the latest figures.

Taken together, the fuel-saving data and sales figures suggest that Australia's EV transition is being driven by more than environmental considerations.

For motorists, the ability to avoid petrol and diesel price shocks can be a significant part of the calculation when deciding what to buy next.

And if fuel prices remain elevated, the financial gap between running an EV and a combustion-powered vehicle could become an increasingly important factor in Australia's new-car market.
