Key Points

  • The 2027 Lexus TZ is Lexus's largest electric SUV yet, with three rows of seats and up to 530 km WLTP range.
  • Lexus Australia is currently assessing the TZ for a local launch, with expected pricing from around $110,000 to $120,000.
  • The TZ sits above the Lexus RZ, the only other electric Lexus currently sold in Australia, which starts from $84,500.

Lexus has revealed the 2027 TZ, its biggest electric SUV to date. The TZ is a six-seater with three rows of seats and is currently being assessed for an Australian launch.

If confirmed, it would join the Lexus RZ as the only electric Lexus models on sale in Australia. The RZ is currently the brand's sole electric option here, starting from $84,500 before on-road costs.

Is the Lexus TZ coming to Australia?

Lexus Australia has not confirmed the TZ yet, but the brand says it is actively looking at it.

"Lexus Australia welcomes the unveil of the new TZ, which marks an exciting evolution and next chapter in the Lexus design story. Lexus Australia continually reviews opportunities to enhance our local line-up and is currently assessing the TZ for potential introduction."

If the TZ is confirmed for Australia, pricing would likely start from around $110,000 to $120,000. That puts it in line with its closest three-row electric SUV rivals such as the flagship versions of the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

The TZ is built in Japan, which supports right-hand drive production. That makes an Australian launch more feasible.

Who does the TZ compete with?

The TZ targets the Volvo EX90 and Cadillac Vistiq, along with the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. All are three-row electric SUVs in the premium segment.

Platform and powertrain

The TZ uses a modified version of the GA-K platform, the same architecture used by the new Lexus ES. It is not built on a dedicated EV platform. Instead, it shares underpinnings with the updated Lexus RX.

The TZ is a luxury sibling to the Toyota Highlander EV (sold as the Kluger in Australia) and the Subaru Getaway. It shares doors with the Highlander EV but has a different front and rear design, and a quieter, more refined cabin.

The TZ uses monocoque construction, so it is not designed for serious off-road use or heavy towing. It is a car-based SUV, not a body-on-frame 4WD.

The TZ produces 300 kW of combined system output from front and rear electric motors (167 kW front, 269 Nm rear). That puts it between the Toyota Highlander EV at 252 kW and the Subaru Getaway at 313 kW.

Two battery options are available in the US: 76.96 kWh and 95.82 kWh. The larger battery is the one listed in global specs, with a claimed WLTP range of 530 km for Europe.

Lexus TZ vs Lexus RZ: how do they compare?

The Lexus RZ is currently the only electric Lexus sold in Australia. It is a five-seat, two-row SUV that starts from $84,500 before on-road costs. Lexus Australia recently cut up to $42,059 from the RZ's price.

The TZ would sit above the RZ in the lineup, offering more space, more rows, and more power. Here is how the two compare on key specs.

Interior and features

The TZ cabin is focused on noise reduction and luxury. Standard features include soft-closing doors, powered ottomans, heated and ventilated first- and second-row seats, and power-folding second- and third-row seats.

A 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and a panoramic glass roof are also included. Wheels range from 20 to 22 inches.

Design details include bamboo wood interior surfaces, a suede-look instrument panel, and aluminium roof rails. The seat assembly uses an adhesive-free structure.

Like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the TZ includes artificial engine sounds. One setting mimics the Lexus LFA's naturally aspirated V10 engine.

Optional rear-wheel steering

Rear-wheel steering is available as an option. It reduces the turning radius and includes a dedicated drive mode that adjusts brake force and drive force distribution to reduce pitching and lateral movement for rear passengers.

Size and dimensions

The TZ measures 5100 mm long, 1990 mm wide, and 1705 mm tall, with a 3050 mm wheelbase. It is the same length and width as the Lexus LX, but 190 mm lower. The wheelbase is 200 mm longer than the LX.

In the US, the TZ is positioned as an electric alternative to the Lexus TX, which is related to the Toyota Grand Highlander. The TX is not sold in Australia.

When will it arrive?

US deliveries are set to begin by the end of 2026. More details on the Australian launch, including a potential confirmation, are expected in the coming months.

For now, the Lexus RZ remains the only electric Lexus you can buy in Australia. If the TZ is confirmed, it will give Australian buyers a larger, more premium electric option from the brand.
