The update signals the brand’s continued evolution beyond affordability toward performance and innovation within the electric SUV segment.
More Power, More Grip: Atto 3 Performance Debuts
At a recent presentation to fleet managers BYD New Zealand country manager Warren Willmot confirmed the addition of a new Atto 3 Performance variant that headlines the 2026 range, delivering 310kW of power and 0–100km/h acceleration in just 3.97 seconds. This is a significant improvement from the Essential’s 7.9 seconds and the Premium’s 7.3 seconds, positioning the Atto 3 closer to high-end EV rivals in terms of straight-line speed. It would make the Atto 3 one of the fatest eletric SUVs available, faster than the BYD Sealion 7 Performance AWD.

Refreshed Exterior and Interior
On the outside, the refreshed model retains the same sleek look introduced earlier this year, including a large trapezoidal front intake, smoked LED headlights, and blackened D-pillars. It also but now features new 18-inch wheels for a sportier stance.
Inside, the cabin gains an 8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a redesigned steering wheel, and a new column-mounted electronic shifter that frees up space in the center console. Wireless charging has been upgraded to 50 watts with active cooling.
The front seats add heating and ventilation and feature new split headrests for added comfort. The door panels have a cleaner, more refined design, and the rear seats now hide two useful storage drawers beneath them.
Refined Lineup Strategy for Broader Appeal
The updated Atto 3 range retains its Essential and Premium models, ensuring the SUV remains accessible to both first-time EV owners and enthusiasts. While pricing details are yet to be officially confirmed for Australia, BYD’s positioning suggests it will continue to compete aggressively in the small-to-medium EV SUV segment.

Performance with a Purpose
The introduction of the AWD Performance model reflects BYD’s intent to shift the Atto 3 from simply being a value choice to a compelling driver’s car. It’s part of a broader product expansion strategy that also includes the Atto 1 and Atto 2 in smaller segments, plus plug-in hybrid Sealion models for extended range capability.
