Last year's launch of the refreshed 2024 Tesla Model 3 featured the RWD and Long Range variants, with details of the Performance not released. These recent documents reveal that Tesla plans to reintroduce the Performance variant not just with a simple refresh, but with significant performance upgrades that will further consolidate its position as one of the best value performance EVs available.
Recent sightings of updated 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance in Valencia, Spain, revealed likely updates to the Model 3 Performance's aesthetics. These updates, which differentiate the Performance variant from the rest of the range, include: new bumpers, larger wheels and 'Ludicrous' badging.
In addition to visual changes, the upcoming refresh for the Tesla Model 3 Performance introduces a significant upgrade in the form of a new rear motor, labelled the 4D2. This enhanced motor promises an increased output, achieving up to 303kW, (406 hp), which denotes a noteworthy jump from the legacy version's 250kW (335hp). Paired with the unchanged front motor, the 3D3, which maintains its 158kW (212hp), the overall power for the vehicle now reaches a formidable 461kW (618 hp).
The boost in power isn't just about the numbers; it's about the experience behind the wheel. Thanks to the 4D2’s capability to hit peak power at a higher speed – 110km/h (68mph) compared to the previous peak power at around 75km/h (47mph) – drivers will enjoy a longer-lasting and more intense acceleration during their drives. This enhancement will undoubtedly be appreciated in scenarios requiring sustained high-speed performance, such as in races beyond the traditional 1/4 mile.
Despite the increase in output, the new Model 3 Performance maintains the same weight as its predecessor at 1,855kg (4,089lbs). The battery pack also remains at 82kWh. Interestingly, the more powerful variant continues to offer a considerable range – up to 430km (270 miles) on a full charge, based on a stricter testing cycle than the EPA. For those in North America, this could translate to an even more impressive range, potentially close to 500km (311 miles).
The recent regulatory filings, media activity in Spain, indicate an imminent launch of the 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance. While there has been no hint of pricing, considering the substantial upgrades and enhancements, a higher price point is expected.
With its combination of extended Range, increased power, and improved aesthetics, Tesla's newest performance model could very well set a new benchmark in the electric vehicle industry.
