Xpeng Imminently Launching in Australia: G6 To Be The First Model

Comments

The highly anticipated Xpeng G6, a challenger to the Tesla Model Y, is coming to Australia in August 2024, a few months earlier than anticipated.

This news comes from Xpeng's global management at the recent European launch of the G6. TrueEV will be distributing the car, and initially it will be available at dealerships in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. TrueEV are also the distributor for Smart, which is also due to launch an SUV this year. Xpeng plans to expand its network to include independent showrooms and experience centers, but details on the total number of outlets and expansion to other states are still unknown.

The G6 will be offered in two versions: a standard and long-range option, with a high-performance AWD model arriving later this year. The base Standard Range model will provide 435km of range and focus on affordability.

Pricing is expected to start around $53,000 before on-road costs, undercutting the Model Y by nearly $3,000. The G6 comes packed with features and will present significant value even if it only undercuts the Model Y by several thousand.

Another advantage of the G6 is its fast-charging capability. Thanks to its 800V electrical architecture, the G6 can support DC fast-charging at up to maximum of 280kW DC, significantly faster than the 170-250kW DC offered by the Tesla Model Y (which uses a 400V system).

The G6 will also compete with established SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Fors Mustang Mach-E.
