Report: Xiaomi Set to Expand EV Lineup With Three Major New Models

Xiaomi’s next automotive wave is taking shape, with a new report by Sina Tech report revealing that the company is preparing three new models: the YU9 family SUV, the YU7 GT performance SUV and the long-wheelbase SU7 L luxury sedan. The trio marks Xiaomi’s most ambitious expansion yet and suggests the tech giant is moving quickly to stake out territory across multiple EV segments both in China and overseas.

Rumours have been swirling for months, but now there is enough detail to paint a clear picture of what Xiaomi hopes to achieve. Three very different vehicles. Three very specific audiences. And one plan that stretches from Chinese families all the way to European performance buyers and luxury commuters.

Let’s break down the trio.

YU9: Xiaomi’s First Full-Size Family Hauler

The YU9 is shaping up to be Xiaomi’s first proper family SUV and its most ambitious model to date. Internally code-named Kunlun, it reportedly stretches past 5.2 metres in length and comes with six or seven seats, putting it directly in the sights of heavy hitters like the Li Auto L9 and the Huawei-backed Aito M9.

Instead of going pure electric, Xiaomi appears to be taking the extended-range route to calm long distance anxiety for family buyers. The company is taking this vehicle seriously enough that CEO Lei Jun personally joined high altitude testing in Xinjiang, a strong sign of the model’s importance.

With launch drawing closer, Xiaomi wants the YU9 to shift its image from a brand beloved by young tech fans to one trusted by full households.

YU7 GT: The Model Y Performance Challenger

While the YU9 handles families, the YU7 GT is built to thrill. This SUV has been seen pounding laps at the Nürburgring in Germany, signalling Xiaomi’s intention to enter the performance EV arena with force. It is essentially a high performance evolution of the YU7 SUV and is positioned as the brand’s first serious export contender for Europe.

The target is clear. Tesla’s Model Y Performance. Xiaomi wants the YU7 GT to earn the labels of performance and technology, not just high volume. A successful European debut would dramatically accelerate Xiaomi’s standing as a global EV competitor.

SU7 L: Xiaomi’s New Luxury Flagship

Spy photos reveal the SU7 L testing on public roads with a visibly longer rear section behind the B-pillar. The stretched wheelbase is expected to exceed 3.1 metres, pushing the length beyond 5.2 metres. For context, the standard SU7 sedan is already 4,997 millimetres long.

The SU7 L aims directly at the executive luxury market. Think Porsche Panamera versus Panamera Extended Wheelbase. More rear seat comfort. More prestige. More space. An interior built for business users and chauffeur service rather than just driving enthusiasts.

With the SU7 series already gaining traction in China, this flagship variant could cement Xiaomi’s credibility at the top end of the EV world.

Xiaomi’s EV Momentum Keeps Building

These three upcoming models expand Xiaomi’s portfolio far beyond the existing SU7 and YU7 pure electric lineup. The YU9 is also set to become the brand’s first extended range EV, filling a major gap and appealing to long distance family buyers.

Sales momentum remains strong. Xiaomi delivered 46,249 EVs in November, almost doubling last year’s performance despite a small month-on-month dip. The company also plans to enter Europe by 2027, and with the YU7 GT likely serving as the first export model, that timeline looks increasingly realistic.

If the YU9, YU7 GT and SU7 L launch as described, Xiaomi’s next chapter in the EV space could be its biggest yet.

What It Means for Australia

With a European debut in 2027 planned, Australian buyers may see the brand’s cars arrive soon after. Given the popularity of budget-friendly EVs from other Chinese manufacturers like BYD and MG, Xiaomi could quickly find a place in the local market.

Xiaomi has already launched their consumer electronics business in Australia with the launch of their online store happening in October. Xiaomi could follow its sales model in China where consumer electronics and cars are sold from the "Mi" stores.

For now, Australian EV watchers will be keeping an eye on Xiaomi’s European rollout, a move that looks increasingly like the steppingstone to local sales.
