As the world rapidly transitions to electric vehicles, MG has been making headlines with its line-up of electric cars, particularly in the Australian and British markets where it has achieved tremendous sales growth. MG, the iconic British car brand now revitalised under Chinese ownership (SAIC Motor), is seizing the electric vehicle (EV) market with affordable, feature-packed models that are leading sales in the more budget-orientated segment of the EV market.
So what MG electric cars are available for sale in Australia? Which future MG models are coming and when will they be available?
The First Electric MG: MG ZS EV
Let's begin with the MG ZS EV, MG's flagship electric offering in the compact SUV category. The ZS EV has been well-received, thanks to its competitive pricing (officially the most affordable electric SUV) and a decent all-electric range.
Following a recent price reduction, the 2023 MG ZS EV Excite (base model) now starts from $40,990 before on-road costs nationwide (before state incentives). It is now officially the cheapest electric SUV available in the Australian market.
The ZS EV comes in two battery sizes, 'Standard Range' and 'Long Range'.
It comes standard with a generous range of features. The base Excite includes a larger 10.1-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, full LED headlights, and ‘MG Pilot’ active safety assistance systems including auto emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, 360-degree surround view camera, and more.
Buyers who want features like blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, faux leather seats, and more will need to step up to the flagship Essence model at $43,990 before on-road costs.
The MG ZS EV range can charge at up to 11kW AC and 94kW DC which is considered about average for this end of the market.
