Tesla FSD

Key Points

  • FSD Supervised launches in Australia and NZ – available from September 18, including test drives.
  • Hardware 4 required – only Teslas built from late 2023 onwards can access the feature.
  • Pricing options – $10,100 outright or $149/month subscription, with a free trial to come.
  • Not fully autonomous – drivers remain legally responsible, though the system assists in all environments.
  • Australia first among RHD markets – joins the US, Canada, and China in public rollout.

Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance system, Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised, is now available for use on Australian and New Zealand roads. The rollout includes showroom test drives and customer access via an over-the-air update.

However, access is limited to owners of Tesla vehicles equipped with the latest Hardware 4 camera and sensor suite. Many earlier customers who paid thousands for FSD since 2017 remain unable to use the feature.

Who Gets Access First

Tesla has confirmed that Model 3 sedans built since September 2023 and Model Y SUVs produced since January 2024 are the first to receive FSD Supervised. Owners who already purchased the $10,100 software package can activate it immediately after updating their vehicles.

About 45,000 of the 145,000 Teslas sold in Australia have Hardware 4, leaving the majority of owners without access. There is currently no timeline for Hardware 3 or earlier vehicles to be supported.

For those yet to purchase, FSD is available as a one-time payment or a forthcoming subscription priced at $149 per month. Based on current costs, the subscription would take almost six years to exceed the outright purchase price.

Not Fully Autonomous

Despite its name, FSD Supervised does not make Teslas fully autonomous. Drivers must remain attentive, keep their eyes on the road, and be ready to take control at any time.

Unlike earlier Autopilot functions, FSD is designed for all driving environments, not just highways. It relies on driver monitoring cameras to ensure attentiveness but may not issue alerts if the system believes the driver is engaged.

Because the driver remains legally responsible, no special permits are required to use the technology on Australian roads.

Tesla FSD

Global Context

Australia and New Zealand are the first right-hand-drive markets to receive FSD Supervised, following launches in the US, Canada, and China. Testing has been conducted in Europe, the UK, and Japan, but public release in those regions has not yet occurred.

Tesla has been trialing FSD in Australia for at least two years, fine-tuning the system on local roads. Demonstrations include handling complex manoeuvres such as hook turns in Melbourne’s CBD.
