Ampcharge ABB Eastern Creek

Key Points

  • Ampol has installed two 400kW fast chargers at Eastern Creek, matching Australia's fastest charging speeds
  • The site includes 10 total charging bays with four drive-through options for larger vehicles
  • Compatible EVs like the Volvo EX60 and MG IM5 can charge from 10-80% in under 20 minutes

Ampol has brought Australia's fastest electric vehicle chargers to Sydney's west. The fuel giant has installed two 400kW fast chargers at its Eastern Creek service centre, matching the country's top charging speeds.

The twin German-made ABB 400kW chargers at Ampol's Eastern Creek Westbound location are the first of their kind in the company's network. They match the charging speed of only two other sites in Australia: one in Western Australia and another on the Hume Highway south of Sydney.

The chargers have been running since September 2025. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen officially opened them last week.

Ten Charging Bays with Drive-Through Options

The Eastern Creek site offers 10 charging bays in total. Eight of these are 360kW chargers, split across locations on each side of the M4 Motorway.

Four bays feature drive-through access. This design helps drivers with larger vehicles, trucks, or cars towing trailers. They can charge without the tight manoeuvring required at standard charging stations.

Faster Charging for Compatible Vehicles

The 400kW chargers deliver faster charging times for electric cars that can accept high power levels. Several models benefit from this increased capacity.

The upcoming Volvo EX60 can accept up to 370kW of charging power. MG's IM5 and IM6 models can handle up to 396kW. These vehicles can charge their batteries from 10% to 80% capacity in between 15 to 20 minutes.

Still Room for Improvement

Despite being among Australia's most powerful chargers, the 400kW units fall short of some vehicles' capabilities. The Zeekr 7X requires 420-450kW to reach its fastest charging performance. This means even at Ampol's new site, the Zeekr cannot charge at its maximum speed. With the continued development in EV charging technology, expect more models to exceed 500 kW charging speeds in the future.

Location and Access

The Ampol Eastern Creek Westbound service centre sits on the M4 Motorway. Drivers heading west from Sydney can access the charging bays directly from the motorway.

The site's 10 charging bays reduce wait times during busy periods. With both 400kW and 360kW options available, drivers can choose based on their vehicle's capabilities and current availability.

Ampol Eastern Creek

Ampol's Eastern Creek charging hub brings Sydney closer to the charging speeds available in other parts of Australia. While the 400kW chargers represent current top speeds, the arrival of vehicles requiring even more power suggests the race for faster charging is far from over.
