Electric vehicle drivers in Melbourne will soon benefit from easier access to public charging, thanks to a new partnership between the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) and EV infrastructure provider EVX.
The partnership will see the rollout of up to 40 dual-socket EV chargers across Melbourne and surrounding areas, providing much-needed charging access in inner suburbs where private driveways and garages are less common.

First Chargers to Go Live Soon
The first two installations are already underway in Ashburton, located at High Street and Warner Avenue. These chargers are expected to go live in the coming weeks and will serve local drivers near Ashburton Park and Warner Reserve.
Additional chargers will follow in several key Melbourne local government areas:

Focus on Inner-City Charging
The new chargers will be pole-mounted, using existing utility poles and street-side parking spaces. This method reduces the need for major roadworks and allows faster installation, often within just a few hours.
Each unit will feature two 22kW charging sockets, suitable for everyday EV use and convenient for residents of apartments, townhouses, and homes without private parking.
According to RACV, this rollout is designed to support the rising number of EV owners who do not have access to home charging.

EVX’s Growing Charging Network
EVX is rapidly expanding its national footprint, with more than 100 public chargers already live in New South Wales. The company plans to add another 120 chargers across Victoria, NSW, South Australia, and the ACT over the next year.
This rollout is supported by a $2.4 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). The funding is part of a federal push to deploy 250 kerbside EV chargers across both urban and regional Australia.

Industry Response
EVX CEO Andrew Forster says the collaboration with RACV plays an important role in improving access to public EV charging for urban residents.
“We’re focused on providing accessible charging options for the millions of Australians living in apartments, units, and inner-city dwellings without private parking,” he said.
This approach aims to support drivers who rely on street parking and those looking to top up their battery during daily travel rather than relying on long charging sessions at major hubs.

What This Means for EV Drivers
This rollout is a major step forward for EV adoption in Victoria. By installing chargers in neighbourhoods where home charging isn’t possible, RACV and EVX are making more viable for a wider range of people.

As demand grows and more Australians consider making the switch to electric vehicles, convenient, accessible, and fast kerbside charging will be essential, especially in densely populated urban areas.
Stay tuned for more updates as installations progress and additional locations are confirmed.
