Polestar 5

The Polestar 5 is one step closer to its Australian launch, with the high-performance electric grand tourer clearing Australian Design Rules (ADR) regulatory approval, the final hurdle before a car can be legally sold on local roads. The certification signals that an official launch is now imminent.

The Polestar 5 is the Swedish brand's most ambitious model to date. Built on an all-new bonded aluminium platform called the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA), the four-door GT boasts a dual-motor setup producing a staggering 650 kW (871 bhp) and 1,000 Nm of torque in Performance guise, capable of launching from 0–100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. A 112 kWh lithium-ion NMC battery pack underpins the drivetrain, with Polestar claiming up to 416 miles (approximately 670 km) of range for the standard Dual Motor variant.

Charging capability is equally impressive, with the 800V electrical architecture supporting DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, enough to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 22 minutes. The Polestar 5 also supports regenerative braking and features a Brembo four-piston brake setup with 400 mm two-piece front discs.

Polestar 5 interior

Inside, the Polestar 5 is every bit the premium grand tourer. A 14.5-inch portrait infotainment screen runs Polestar's Android Automotive OS with integrated Google functionality, while a 9.5-inch driver-facing display sits ahead of the wheel. A Bowers & Wilkins audio system with up to 21 speakers and 1,680 watts of output provides a concert-hall experience on the move. Sustainable materials are used throughout, including 100 per cent recycled textiles and natural flax fibre composites.

The Polestar 5 competes directly with the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air in the premium electric GT segment. UK pricing starts from £89,500 for the Dual Motor Launch Edition and £104,900 for the Performance Launch Edition. Australian pricing is yet to be confirmed but is expected to be announced alongside the official local launch date in the coming weeks.

With ADR approval now secured, Australian EV enthusiasts won't have to wait much longer to get behind the wheel of what is shaping up to be one of the most compelling electric vehicles ever offered in this market.
