Newcastle Ramps Up Public EV Charging With 34 New Ports

Comments

The city of Newcastle is nearly done tripling its public EV charging network, with 34 new charging ports already switched on across 11 locations, and a few final installs wrapping up this month, according to a press release published by The City of Newcastle.

Backed by $270,000 in co-funding from the NSW Government’s EV Kerbside Charging Program, the project is part of Newcastle’s wider push to support low-emission transport and hit its target of 52% EV sales by 2031.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s live now, what’s coming soon, and how it fits into the city’s green transport goals.

Strong EV growth in Newcastle

Newcastle’s EV registrations have exploded, up more than 1000% in just four years, with over 1,350 EVs now on local roads. But there’s a catch: many of those drivers don’t have access to private or off-street charging.

That’s where this rollout steps in.

By spreading new chargers across a variety of suburbs, the city is making EV ownership easier for residents and more practical for visitors. And for those concerned about sustainability, every new charging port is powered by 100% renewable energy from the city’s Summerhill Solar Farm and Sapphire Wind Farm.

Supporting the Shift to Net-Zero

The expansion is a strategic part of the Newcastle Environment Strategy, which aims to cut transport emissions and accelerate EV adoption.

Michelle Bisson, Executive Director for Planning and Environment at City of Newcastle, puts it plainly:

“Increasing the availability of public chargers in different suburbs is an important step in achieving our goal of driving EV uptake and creating a cleaner, quieter, and lower emissions city.”

Statewide Momentum for Kerbside Charging

Newcastle’s rollout is part of a broader NSW Government initiative. The first round of EV Kerbside Charging Grants unlocked $4.1 million in co-funding for 671 new chargers across 391 sites in Sydney and Newcastle. A second round in July 2024 added another $4.5 million for 16 more local government areas.

With more local councils getting involved and cities like Newcastle leading by example, EV infrastructure is steadily catching up with demand—something every Aussie EV driver can get behind.
