Tasmania is flipping the switch on another round of public EV infrastructure, with 11 new charging stations set to roll out across the island state.
It’s the third wave of installations under the ChargeSmart Electric Vehicle Charging Grants program, and it brings $550,000 in fresh funding to help build out Tasmania’s growing EV network. With more electric vehicles hitting the road each month, the state is pushing to ensure drivers can plug in easily, no matter where they are.
This latest boost builds on earlier ChargeSmart rounds, which delivered a total of 33 fast chargers and 46 workplace units thanks to $1.3 million in previous grants. Now, the focus shifts to new regional sites.

Regional Reach Gets a Boost
Leading the latest rollout are two key players in Tasmania’s EV scene: Electric Highway Tasmania and Electrona.
Electric Highway Tasmania will deploy three new stations and upgrade one existing site:
- Huonville – New charger
- Prospect Vale – New charger
- Miena – New charger
- St Helens – Existing site upgrade

Meanwhile, Electrona, a Hobart-based EV charging firm, will install four brand-new stations in well-travelled areas:
- Port Arthur
- Bothwell
- Coles Bay
- Orford
These locations are critical links for regional travel and tourism, particularly as EVs become the default choice for many drivers.

Demand Is Growing Fast
Electric vehicles are becoming a common sight on Tasmanian roads. But with growing adoption comes growing demand—and some stations are already nearing capacity.
“Some charging stations are either approaching capacity or will get there in the near future,” said Environment Minister Madeleine Ogilvie.
Under the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, the state aims to ensure equitable, accessible, and reliable public charging from coast to highlands.
Ogilvie added that more EVs on the road not only cut emissions, but also “create more pleasant walking and driving experiences” for everyone. Cleaner streets, quieter towns, and less tailpipe pollution.

Why It Matters
Tasmania already runs on nearly 100% renewable electricity. Now, it's laying the groundwork to become one of the most EV-friendly states in the country.
By targeting regional blackspots, this new round of funding helps eliminate range anxiety and opens up scenic routes to EV travel. Tourists can cruise confidently to Coles Bay or Port Arthur. Locals in Miena and Bothwell now have reason to consider making the switch.
For a state with a strong environmental identity, investing in smart EV infrastructure just makes sense.
