MG Motor Australia has officially locked in a new version of its popular MG 4 electric hatchback for local release, expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2026. Unlike what many might expect, this new MG 4 will not replace the current model, instead, it will sit beneath it in the range as a more affordable front-wheel drive (FWD) option.

A New MG 4, Not a Replacement
The upcoming FWD MG 4 will be marketed alongside the existing rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions currently on sale. MG’s local boss, Peter Ciao, says the new model is aimed at drivers looking for a city-focused EV that balances affordability and everyday usability.
“We saw the opportunity for an affordable FWD vehicle to complement the MG4 RWD and AWD. It will be a completely different vehicle — perfect for urban needs,” said Ciao.
MG has also trademarked the "MG 4 Urban" name in Australia, hinting at a possible badge for this city-friendly variant.

Powertrain, Battery and Range
The new FWD MG 4 will be offered with two battery options, a 43kWh and a 54kWh pack. Both use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and will power a single front-mounted electric motor producing 120kW and 250Nm of torque.
MG claims a driving range of up to 530km, though this figure is based on China’s CLTC standard, which tends to return higher estimates than WLTP.

Existing MG 4 to Continue with Updates
The current MG 4 lineup will remain on sale, but some changes are coming. MG will phase out the smaller 51kWh and larger 77kWh battery packs in Australia. Moving forward, only the 64kWh battery option will be offered locally. Updated features and equipment are also expected, along with a price rise.
MG is encouraging buyers to “snare their piece of history now” with current models priced under $40,000 drive-away.

Pricing and Market Positioning
While local pricing for the new FWD MG 4 hasn’t been confirmed, it is expected to undercut the existing MG 4 lineup. For context, the BYD Dolphin starts from $29,990 and the GWM Ora is currently $33,990 drive-away. MG has previously offered the current MG 4 from $30,990 drive-away.
The addition of a more affordable MG 4 FWD variant could give MG a strong contender in Australia’s growing compact EV market.
