Mazda could soon return to the electric sedan space in Australia, as the company evaluates the potential launch of the 6e. The 6e is a battery electric vehicle co-developed with Chinese automaker Changan. A business case is currently being prepared by Mazda Australia to determine if the model fits into its future local plans.

A Step Closer for Right-Hand Drive Markets
The 6e, known as the EZ-6 in China, made its global debut at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show. Mazda Australia’s Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, confirmed that two key conditions have been met for the model to be considered here: availability for export markets and right-hand-drive compatibility.
“We’re actively building a business case for the 6e,” Bhindi said. “With those initial hurdles cleared, we’re now assessing whether it makes sense for our local lineup.”

Power, Range, and Platform
Built on the same EPA1 platform as the Deepal S07 already available in Australia, the 6e shares similarities with the EZ-60 SUV also revealed in China. In Europe, the electric sedan offers an 80kWh battery and a WLTP-certified range of up to 552 km.
Here’s a breakdown of the EV specs currently known for the Mazda 6e:
Specification | Detail |
Platform | EPA1 (shared with Deepal S07) |
Battery Capacity | 80 kWh |
WLTP Range | 552 km |
Motor Type | Single, rear-wheel drive |
Power Output | 180 kW |
Torque | 320 Nm |
In China, a range-extender version is also offered. It combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with either an 18.9kWh or 28.4kWh battery. However, there’s no confirmation whether this version will be included in any Australian proposal.

A Sedan in an SUV World
The Mazda 6e is positioned as a successor to the discontinued Mazda 6 sedan. But given the steady shift in buyer preferences towards SUVs, there’s cautious optimism about how it might perform in the current market. Mazda acknowledges that SUVs are dominating globally, not just in Australia.
Still, the local team believes there is room for the 6e if the business case proves strong enough.

Timing and Future Models
A decision about bringing the 6e to Australia is expected within the next six months. Bhindi mentioned that timing could change depending on internal and external factors but remains hopeful for a resolution before early 2026.
Mazda is also watching the EZ-60 SUV closely. Though it has only been showcased in China so far, the modelrumoured to launch internationally as the CX-6e, shares similar powertrain components with the 6e. However, its larger size and heavier frame may affect its range compared to the sedan.

Summary
Mazda’s potential return to the local electric sedan segment with the 6e marks a key moment in the brand’s evolving EV strategy. While the business case is still in progress, signs suggest that this Changan-backed electric vehicle could find a place in Australian showrooms if market conditions align.
