Key Points
- A camouflaged Hyundai Ioniq 3 was spotted at Murumbateman Estate winery in NSW, suggesting Australian testing is underway.
- Hyundai confirmed in April 2026 the Ioniq 3 will launch in Australia at the start of 2027.
- The Ioniq 3 will compete with the MG4, BYD Dolphin, and GAC Aion UT in the affordable EV hatch segment.
The Ioniq 3 was spotted at Murumbateman Estate winery, located in the NSW Southern Tablelands region near Canberra. The area is a known testing ground for vehicles due to its mix of regional roads, highway stretches, and varied terrain.
The car was covered in a black-and-white wrap designed to break up the body lines and hide final styling details. Even so, the compact five-door hatchback shape was clear. The Ioniq 3 sits roughly in the same size class as the outgoing Hyundai i30.
Launch confirmed for early 2027
Hyundai announced in April 2026 that the Ioniq 3 would launch in Australia at the start of 2027. It will be the brand's most affordable dedicated electric vehicle and its smallest Ioniq model to date.
The Ioniq 3 is built on Hyundai's E-GMP platform using a 400V front-wheel-drive layout. Two battery options are expected: a 42.2kWh standard range and a 61kWh long range. Both support up to 150kW DC fast charging, which means a 10 to 80 percent charge in around 30 minutes.

Taking on the affordable EV hatch segment
The Ioniq 3 will go up against a growing list of affordable electric hatchbacks in Australia. The MG4, BYD Dolphin, and GAC Aion UT all sit in the $30,000 to $36,000 range and have been selling well.
The Ioniq 3 is expected to be priced in the low-to-mid $40,000s, which puts it above those rivals. Hyundai is likely counting on its brand recognition, longer warranty reputation, and stronger resale values to justify the premium.
How it compares
Here is a quick look at how the Ioniq 3 stacks up against its main rivals on key numbers.
Ioniq 3 vs rivals: key comparison
Model | Price (AUD) | WLTP Range | DC Charging |
Hyundai Ioniq 3 (est.) | Low-to-mid $40,000s | 344-496km | Up to 150kW |
MG4 EV Urban (2026) | $31,990-$34,990 d/a | 316-405km | Up to 150kW |
BYD Dolphin (2026) | ~$30,000-$41,000 | 340-427km | Up to 88kW |
GAC Aion UT (2026) | $30,990-$35,990 d/a | 430km | Up to 80kW |

What to expect inside
The Ioniq 3 will debut Hyundai's new Pleos Connect infotainment system, which is based on Android Automotive. Depending on the grade, buyers will get a 12.9-inch or 14.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital phone key.
Physical buttons are kept for climate and audio controls. The cabin has a flat floor, 441 litres of boot space, and a hidden under-floor storage compartment. Higher grades are expected to include heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a Bose audio system.
On the safety side, the Ioniq 3 is expected to include Highway Driving Assist 2, a surround-view camera, blind-spot cameras, and remote smart parking assist.
Why it matters for Australia
Australia's affordable EV hatch segment has been dominated by Chinese brands. The MG4, BYD Dolphin, and GAC Aion UT have all found buyers, but some shoppers remain cautious about newer marques.
The Ioniq 3 gives those buyers a familiar brand with a proven dealer network. It also brings Hyundai's E-GMP platform, which has already proven itself in the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6. Resale values for Hyundai EVs have also held up better than some rivals.

What comes next
Hyundai has not yet confirmed pricing for Australia. The Murumbateman sighting suggests local testing is well underway, which is a positive sign for the early 2027 timeline.
More details on trim levels, pricing, and features are expected closer to launch. We will update this article as new information comes to hand.
