Key Points

  • Jaguar has officially named its new electric four-door GT the Type 01, with a full reveal planned for later in 2026.
  • The Type 01 uses a tri-motor setup producing more than 735kW and backed by a 120kWh battery on an 850V architecture.
  • Jaguar says the car will charge at up to 350kW and is targeting more than 400 miles (644km) of range.

Jaguar has confirmed the name of its long-awaited electric grand tourer: the Type 01. The announcement, made on 12 May 2026, ends years of speculation and follows a drawn-out rebrand process that began in 2023. The full production car will be revealed later in 2026.

The Type 01 is a luxury four-door GT built entirely around electric power. It sits at the centre of Jaguar's repositioning as a high-end, low-volume brand. Prototypes are set to appear at the Monaco Formula E race this weekend.

What the name means

The name Type 01 draws on Jaguar's heritage of type-named cars, including the C-Type, E-Type, and F-Type. Jaguar says the "Type" element connects to that lineage, while the "01" points forward: zero tailpipe emissions and the first car of a new chapter for the brand.

According to Jaguar, the name will appear "on the strikethrough motif where the bonnet meets the windscreen." Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover described the zero as signifying a complete brand reset, and the one as representing the first car of a new era.

"We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance," said Glover.

Design details

One of the more unusual design choices is the absence of a rear window. Jaguar has not detailed how rear visibility is handled, though camera-based systems are common in this class of vehicle.

The 120kWh battery uses a configuration described by Jaguar as unique to the brand. No further details on cell chemistry or pack layout have been released.

Context: Jaguar's rebrand

Jaguar announced its intention to go fully electric and reposition as a luxury brand in 2023. The rebrand campaign launched in late 2024 attracted significant attention, including criticism over the direction of the brand's identity. The Type 01 is the first vehicle to emerge from that strategy.

Jaguar has not confirmed pricing, production volumes, or market availability for Australia. Given the car's positioning as a high-end GT, pricing is expected to be well above $100,000 AUD, though this is unconfirmed.
