Chinese automaker JAC might be best known in Australia for its turbo-diesel T9 ute, but that’s about to change. The brand is gearing up to showcase its EV ambitions in a big way with the DE-FINE concept, a striking, high-performance electric vehicle (EV) that’s set to make its Australian debut in Melbourne on April 5-6.

A Glimpse Into JAC’s EV Future
First revealed last year, the JAC DE-FINE is a sleek, futuristic four-door EV concept designed to turn heads and showcase the company’s technological capabilities. This is not just another concept car; it’s JAC’s statement of intent in the evolving EV landscape.

Underpinning the DE-FINE is an 800-volt EV platform, putting it in the same high-performance league as Porsche’s Taycan and Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N. Powering the concept is a cutting-edge 460kW silicon-carbide electric motor that can send energy to two or all four wheels. JAC claims the DE-FINE can rocket from 0-100km/h in “around three seconds,” placing it firmly in supercar territory.

A Design Straight Out of the Future
Unlike JAC’s rugged T9 ute, the DE-FINE is all about aerodynamic efficiency and modern aesthetics. It sits low to the ground with a streamlined front end, a sloping roofline, and inset doors that give it a look straight out of a sci-fi movie. If someone had envisioned a futuristic EV back in the 1980s, it would probably look a lot like this.

Inside, the concept continues to impress. The cabin is designed for four passengers, with the rear seats extending almost into the boot. A massive 50-inch panoramic screen spans between the A-pillars, while a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen sits within easy reach of the front passengers. The steering wheel? Almost rectangular, in true concept car fashion.

Is JAC’s EV Coming to Australia?
As exciting as the DE-FINE is, JAC has no immediate plans to put it into production. Instead, the concept serves as a showcase for the brand’s “Guiding Intelligence with Intelligence” framework, hinting at future innovations, including hybrid powertrains and potential battery-swapping technology.

For now, the only JAC vehicles Australians can get their hands on are the T9 utes, priced from $42,662 before on-road costs for the base Oasis variant, and $45,630 plus on-roads for the Haven trim. However, with JAC making bold moves in the EV space, it might not be long before we see its electric offerings on Aussie roads.
JAC’s display in Melbourne will feature both the DE-FINE and the T9 ute, giving visitors a taste of the brand’s present and future.
