Volkswagen Australia has made a bold statement in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market by announcing a recommended retail price of $59,990 for its ID.4 Pro model.

With an impressive WLTP range of 544km on a single charge, the German automaker appears to be directly challenging the value proposition offered by newer Chinese electric vehicle brands in Australia.

Notably, the ID.4 Pro offers between 60-120km more WLTP range than many of the Chinese electric vehicles currently being promoted in Australia.

This extended range capability makes the ID.4 Pro particularly well-suited for long-distance travel, requiring just two fast charging stops on the popular routes from Sydney to Melbourne, a significant advantage for Australian drivers accustomed to covering vast distances.

ID.4 Pro

The competitively priced ID.4 Pro delivers impressive specifications including 210kW of power and 545Nm of torque through a rear-wheel drive system.

The vehicle accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds, making it slightly faster than Volkswagen's popular Tiguan 162TSI combustion engine model.

In an interesting strategic move, Volkswagen is directly comparing its new electric vehicles to its internal combustion engine ICE counterparts,, highlighting that pricing between the two powertrains is nearly identical.

The current Tiguan 162TSI R-Line is listed at $60,590 RRP with comparable equipment just $600 more than the all-electric ID.4 Pro.

This price parity represents a significant shift in the market, removing one of the traditional barriers to EV adoption.

Piergiorgio Minto, Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles director, reinforced this approach, stating: "Whether refuelled or recharged, Volkswagen has a leading SUV available."

This messaging suggests Volkswagen is positioning electric vehicles not as premium alternatives but as equivalent choices for consumers at similar price points.

The ID.4 Pro comes well-equipped with features including IQ.LIGHT Matrix LED headlamps, a panoramic roof, power adjustable front seats with memory and massage function, and a 12.9-inch infotainment system.

Advanced driver assistance technologies such as Travel Assist, which combines Adaptive Cruise Control with active Lane Assist, are also standard.

Volkswagen’s aggressive pricing and range advantage arrives as Chinese manufacturers gain traction in Australia. The ID.4 Pro’s blend of German engineering, dealer network support, and 544km range aims to counter newer rivals.

The ID.4 Pro's combination of German engineering, extensive dealer network, competitive pricing, and superior range appears designed to counter the appeal of these newer market entrants.

ID.5 GTX

The ID.4 Pro and flagship ID.5 GTX will debut publicly at the Everything Electric Sydney show (Sydney Olympic Park), with deliveries from mid-2025. Sister brand Skoda will also unveil its Elroq EV at the event.
