The Geely Starray EM-i has proven its efficiency credentials by setting a new Guinness World Record. The plug-in hybrid SUV achieved the lowest fuel consumption for its category on the iconic Sydney to Melbourne coastal drive.

Between 9th and 10th December 2025, the Starray EM-i completed the 1,056 km journey with verified fuel consumption of just 3.83 L/100km. This result beats the vehicle's official NEDC figure of 4.4 L/100km.

How the EM-i Super Hybrid System Works

The Starray EM-i uses Geely's EM-i Super Hybrid Technology, built on the company's GEA architecture. The system pairs a high-efficiency 1.5L internal combustion engine with a 29.8kWh battery pack and an 11-in-1 E-Drive System.

This setup allows the vehicle to switch between three driving modes: pure electric, pure engine, and hybrid. The system automatically selects the most efficient mode based on driving conditions.

The EM-i technology achieves its efficiency through four key elements:

  • A dedicated high thermal efficiency engine
  • An efficient hybrid electric drive system
  • Intelligent energy management strategies
  • Ultra-low drag aerodynamic design

The Challenge Route

The record attempt took place on the coastal route from Sydney to Melbourne. This route was chosen to reflect real-world driving conditions rather than a controlled test environment.

Under supervision from official Guinness World Records adjudicators, the Starray EM-i navigated varied terrain including coastal plains, rolling hills, and urban traffic. The vehicle also faced the early summer heat of the Australian coast.
