Key Points

  • BMW has revealed the M Concept Neue Klasse, previewing the design of the upcoming electric M3 sedan.
  • The concept features a quad-motor powertrain with all-wheel drive and an 800V electrical architecture.
  • Production of the electric M3 is expected to start in 2027, with reports indicating at least 1000kW of power.

BMW has unveiled the M Concept Neue Klasse show car ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, offering a strong indication of what the first electric M3 sedan will look like.

Based on the i3 sedan, the concept carries M's signature pumped-up wheel arches. The shark nose has a sharper appearance, with a V-shaped depression in the bonnet leading to a clearer division between the kidney grilles and a split design for enlarged lower air intakes.

BMW says the "trimaran-style" bumper is inspired by high-speed sailing boats. It provides cooling for the high-performance electric drivetrain and serves as the visual and structural support for the front splitter.

The yellow highlights in the headlight graphics are set to become a new styling feature across all M models, linking the brand's road cars to its racing vehicles.

At the rear, a ducktail spoiler provides extra downforce and visual presence. The design of the bumper, diffuser, and other aero elements mirrors the front end. White "track lights" frame the air intakes at the front, while red versions sit in a similar position at the rear.

The car is painted in a new shade called Monza Red. Natural fibre finishes are used on the front splitter, bonnet vent, and rear diffuser.

Inside, there are four bucket seats with Merino leather in Bathurst Blue and Berry Red, plus red five-point seat belts. Black nubuck leather covers the steering wheel, door trims, and roll bars.

The dashboard is upholstered in a unique black knit material with hexagonal backlighting. Red accents appear on the gear shifter, steering wheel paddles, and throughout the infotainment and instrumentation displays.

Drivetrain and performance

The concept also provides clues about the electric M3's drivetrain. It uses an 800V electrical architecture and a battery with a capacity of at least 100kWh. BMW says the battery is "structurally integrated with both the front and rear axle". The powertrain uses four electric motors with all-wheel drive.

"Thanks to the integrated, wheel-specific control of the drivetrain and braking systems, BMW M eDrive opens up new potential for driving dynamics and driving safety. It enables high recuperation performance, optimal traction right up to the limit and particularly direct response," BMW said.

Reports indicate the electric M3's four-motor setup will produce at least 1000kW. Production is expected to start in 2027.

For those not convinced by high-performance electric sedans, BMW is also developing a petrol-powered M3 based on the next-generation combustion-powered 3 Series.
