It's hardly surprising that the Geely EX5 ranks among Australia's best-selling electric vehicles for 2025.
The vehicle excels as a luxury lounge room on wheels, perfect for buyers who prioritise comfort features like the 16-speaker audio system and front seats with massage, heating, cooling and full recline functionality over driving dynamics.
After spending a week with a media loan EX5 Inspire, I've discovered several interesting features and quirks that other reviewers haven't mentioned. These observations reveal both clever innovations and potential frustrations that Australian buyers should know about.
Improved External Sound System
The EX5's pedestrian warning system has been significantly refined since its Australian launch. Initial models featured an ice cream truck-like sound that drew criticism for being embarrasing.
The current system produces a subtle, inoffensive tone when reversing that's easily audible without being intrusive. Forward movement at low speeds now generates a more sophisticated audio signature that blends better with urban environments.

Hidden Storage Solutions
The Geely EX5 offers several concealed storage compartments that maximise interior practicality. Underneath the rear passenger seats, drivers will find a hidden storage area capable of holding up to 3.12 kilograms of items, perfect for keeping children's toys organised.
Additional storage exists beneath the rear section of the centre console, providing another discrete area for smaller items. These thoughtful touches address real-world storage challenges that families face daily.

Impressive Boot Capacity
Despite initial appearances suggesting limited cargo space, the EX5 conceals substantial storage beneath the boot floor. The under-floor compartment provides 108 litres of space, while the main area offers 302 litres above.
An adjustable boot floor allows owners to choose between a flat loading lip or recessed configuration to maximise vertical clearance. During testing, the boot accommodated a full weekly shop including groceries and produce, plus a shopping trolley, demonstrating genuine real-world utility.

No Front Storage Compartment
Unlike many electric vehicles, the EX5 lacks a front storage compartment (frunk). This omission represents a missed opportunity for storing items like gym clothes or takeaway food that benefit from separation from the main cabin.
The absence of this increasingly common EV feature may disappoint buyers who have come to expect this additional storage convenience. Traditional internal combustion engine packaging constraints don't apply here, making this oversight more noticeable.
Connected Services and Data Limitations
The EX5 includes built-in connectivity through Optus 4G, with no option to switch to Telstra or other networks. The system provides 2GB of monthly data and app access free for two years.
Once the monthly data allocation is exhausted, owners must use their phone's WiFi hotspot for internet connectivity. Basic remote vehicle functions remain accessible through the app, but streaming and advanced online features become unavailable without supplementary internet access.
After the initial two-year period, Geely reserves the right to charge for continued connectivity services, though pricing remains unannounced. This approach mirrors other manufacturers who have gradually introduced subscription models for premium connected features.

Comprehensive Massage Function
The top-specification Inspire variant includes an extensive massage system accessible through the vehicle settings menu. The system offers six different massage programs with individual control for each front seat.
The massage intensity proved surprisingly powerful for an automotive application, with specific programs targeting different muscle groups including lumbar and shoulder regions. This feature could provide genuine relief for drivers experiencing lower back stiffness during longer journeys.

Problematic Door Handle System
The flush-mounted door handles that automatically extend upon approach frequently malfunction during testing. The proximity sensors often failed to detect the key fob, requiring manual door handle operation.
Departure posed similar issues, with doors occasionally failing to retract and lock automatically. This inconsistency meant checking door status manually rather than relying on the automated system.
When functioning, the handles extend considerably from the body, potentially causing contact issues in narrow garages. The system's unreliability suggests disabling this feature entirely may prove more practical.
Driving Dynamics and Navigation
Unlike the MGS5 EV, the EX5 doesn't offer single-pedal driving capability. Drivers must use the brake pedal to achieve complete stops at traffic lights, as regenerative braking alone won't bring the vehicle to a complete halt.
However, the EX5 demonstrates notably sharper acceleration compared to its MG competitor, providing more responsive power delivery when overtaking or merging. This trade-off may appeal to drivers who prioritise performance over convenience features.
The built-in navigation system provides turn-by-turn directions with real-time updates, though the audio comes from speakers positioned behind the driver's head rather than the expected forward-facing location.
Without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support until late 2025, drivers miss crucial real-time traffic information including roadworks warnings that apps like Waze provide.
During testing, this limitation resulted in unexpected delays when encountering unannounced roadworks that smartphone navigation would have detected and routed around. This represents a significant practical limitation for daily driving until smartphone integration arrives.

Overall Review
Despite some technological limitations, it's hardly surprising that the Geely EX5 ranks among Australia's best-selling electric vehicles for 2025.
The vehicle's focus on comfort and convenience over driving dynamics makes it ideal for buyers seeking a luxury lounge room on wheels.
For those prioritising passenger comfort over spirited driving, the EX5 delivers with features like its 16-speaker audio system and comprehensively equipped front seats offering massage, heating, cooling, and full recline functionality.
These luxury appointments, combined with clever storage solutions, create a compelling package for family-focused buyers who value comfort above all else.
