- Cupra Born VZ EV arrives in Australia as a single unit
- The 245kW electric hot hatch was sold within 24 hours
- Powered by a rear motor producing 240kW and 545Nm
- Larger 79kWh battery and sport-tuned chassis upgrades
- Cupra still assessing future Born launch in Australia
The high-performance Cupra Born VZ has officially arrived in Australia, but only as a single example that has already been sold.
The vehicle surfaced at Cupra Artarmon, where it appeared briefly in an online listing before being snapped up by a customer within a day.
Priced at $71,990 before on-road costs, the Dark Forest Green hatchback was described as a “one-of-a-kind” vehicle in the Australian market.
Despite its arrival, the car does not represent a full local launch. Instead, it is believed to be a production-spec evaluation unit brought to Australia while Cupra considers the timing of a broader return of the Born lineup.
The company previously delayed the model several times, pushing its planned launch from 2025 to early 2026, before pausing plans again while waiting for the updated version to become available globally.

A more powerful version of Cupra’s electric hot hatch
The Born VZ is the most powerful version of the electric hatchback available globally, delivering significantly more performance than the standard Born previously sold in Australia.
Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor, producing:
- 240kW of power
- 545Nm of torque
This represents a substantial upgrade compared with the earlier Australian-spec Born, which produced 170kW and 310Nm.
Performance highlights include:
- 0–100km/h in around 5.6 seconds
- Top speed of 200km/h
- 79kWh lithium-ion battery
The VZ variant also introduces a sport-tuned chassis, featuring revised dampers, upgraded springs and anti-roll bars designed to improve handling.
On the outside, the VZ gains larger wheels, wider tyres and unique styling touches, while the cabin receives sport bucket seats made from recycled materials and a larger infotainment display.

Cupra may be waiting for the facelifted model
The single Australian example appears to be a pre-facelift version of the Born VZ, which arrived just as the updated 2027 model was revealed in Europe.
That updated lineup introduces:
- Improved software
- Updated battery options
- Range of up to around 600km (WLTP) for larger-battery variants
Cupra Australia has indicated it is currently reviewing whether to bring the refreshed model to the local market.
If the facelift proceeds, the VZ is expected to act as a halo performance model, potentially followed by more affordable variants later.
The strategy would mark the return of the Born after a two-year absence from Australian showrooms.
What this means for the Australian EV market
The unusual arrival of a single Born VZ highlights the uncertain timing of some EV launches in Australia, particularly for niche performance models.
Manufacturers often wait for updated versions before committing to full local launches, especially as EV technology evolves rapidly.
For Australia’s EV market, it also reflects a growing trend where performance electric hatchbacks act as brand flagships, helping manufacturers showcase electric capabilities while building interest in broader EV lineups.
If the facelifted Born does return locally, it could re-enter a segment that has expanded rapidly with new electric vehicles arriving across multiple price points.
