Key Points
- The Chery Q EV has been confirmed for New Zealand with a 2027 launch target.
- EV models launched in New Zealand typically follow in Australia, making a local release likely.
- The Q EV is a rear-wheel drive electric hatch with a 42kWh battery and up to 400km range (NEDC).
Chery has confirmed its smallest electric vehicle for New Zealand, with a launch expected in 2027. The news was first reported by AutoTrader NZ.
Known as the QQ3 in China, the car will be sold as the Chery Q in New Zealand. And if history is any guide, Australia could be next.
EV models confirmed for New Zealand have a strong track record of launching in Australia shortly after. The two markets share right-hand drive requirements and similar consumer preferences, making a combined rollout a logical step for most brands.

Already Seen in Sydney
The Chery Q EV was showcased at a Chery Tech Event in Sydney earlier this year. That appearance suggests Chery is already testing the waters in Australia and is aware of local interest in the model.
No official confirmation has been made for Australia yet, but the Sydney showcase adds weight to the idea that a local launch is being considered.
What Is the Chery Q EV?
The Q is a small electric hatch measuring 4,195mm in length. It has a compact footprint but Chery says the interior space is generous for its size.
Power comes from a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 90kW and 115Nm. That makes it rear-wheel drive, which is unusual for a small EV at this price point.
The battery is 42kWh. Chery claims a peak range of over 400km under NEDC testing. Real-world figures will be lower, but it should be enough for everyday use.

Charging and Tech
DC fast charging tops out at 85kW. Chery says the battery can go from 30 to 80 per cent in around 16 minutes. Decent charging speeds for a small, affordable EV.
Inside, there is an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported.

Right-Hand Drive Already in Production
The Chery Q has already launched in Thailand, which means right-hand drive production is underway. This removes one of the biggest hurdles for Chinese brands entering markets like New Zealand and Australia.
A Chery spokesperson confirmed a New Zealand launch is estimated for 2027. No timeline has been given for Australia, but the groundwork is clearly being laid.

How It Compares to the Competition
When the Chery Q arrives, it will compete in the small, affordable EV segment. Its closest rivals are the BYD Atto 1, GAC Aion UT and Geely EX2. Here is how the key specs compare.
Chery Q EV vs Competitors
Spec | Chery Q EV | BYD Atto 1 | GAC Aion UT | Geely EX2 |
Power | 90kW | 65kW | 150kW | 85kW |

Drive | RWD | FWD | FWD | RWD |
AU Price (est.) | TBC | From $23,990 | From $30,990 | TBC |
Note: Chery Q EV range is based on NEDC testing, which tends to be higher than real-world figures. WLTP figures are not yet available. Geely EX2 specs are based on pre-launch information and may change.
What This Means for Australia
No Australian launch has been confirmed. But all signs point to an eventual launch. Chery already sells the Omoda E5 and Tiggo 9 here. The brand has a growing local presence and the Q EV would slot in below those models on price.
If the New Zealand launch goes ahead in 2027, an Australian announcement could follow within months. The Sydney Tech Event appearance earlier this year suggests Chery is already thinking about it.
