BYD’s New EV Charger Promises Full Charge in Just 10 Minutes

Comments

BYD is making headlines again; but this time, it’s not another BYD model. The Chinese automaker, already a dominant force in the global EV space, is set to unveil its latest innovation - an ultra-fast 1,000kW EV charging system, that could potentially double the charging power of Tesla’s latest Superchargers. This breakthrough, part of the all-new BYD Super e-Platform, will be officially unveiled on March 17 at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen.

This announcement is huge, not just for BYD but for the entire EV industry. If the company delivers on its promise, it could eliminate one of the biggest concerns in EV adoption, charging time by making EV refueling as fast as a petrol stop.

The BYD Super e-Platform: A Bold Leap Forward

BYD isn’t calling this just another EV platform, it’s positioning the Super e-Platform as a complete reinvention of pure electric technology. According to BYD’s official Weibo post, the system will leverage “disruptive technology” to tackle the biggest headache in EV use: long charging times.

While details remain scarce until the launch event, leaked specifications suggest that BYD’s new ultra-fast charger will support charging voltages of up to 1,000V and a staggering 1,000kW of power. To put that into perspective, Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers—considered the fastest in the world max out at 500kW. That means BYD’s new system could, in theory, fully charge a 100kWh battery in just 10 minutes.

For reference, most existing ultra-fast chargers, including Tesla’s, range between 200kW to 400kW, with only a few rare exceptions reaching 500kW. If BYD’s claims hold true, this changes the game entirely, potentially cutting charging times in half and putting EV charging on par with petrol refuelling speeds.

What This Means for Australian EV Drivers

For Aussie EV drivrtd, this could be a significant win. Faster charging means less time waiting at public chargers, making long-distance road trips and daily EV use more convenient than ever. While Tesla dominates Australia’s fast-charging network with its Supercharger stations, BYD’s entry into the ultra-fast charging race could one day lead to charging infrastructure that matches petrol fuelling times. Today, the fastest chargers available are rated at 360 kW.

While BYD's innovation in this space is exciting, it should be noted, none of its models in Australia charger faster than 200 kW. It is likely this new charging system will be thoroughly market tested in China before it makes its way to Australia.

Meet the Han L and Tang L: BYD’s Latest High-Performance EVs

Alongside its revolutionary charging tech, BYD will also launch pre-sales of two new EVs: the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. These models, believed to be based on the Super e-Platform, will support the 1,000kW charging tech, further demonstrating BYD’s confidence in its new system.

Here’s why these models are generating serious buzz:

🚀 Insane Acceleration

  • Han L: 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds
  • Tang L: 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds

💪 Powerful Dual-Motor Setup

  • Front motor: 230kW
  • Rear motor: 580kW (a rare feat—most high-performance EVs peak at 300kW per motor)

Game-Changing Range & Charging

  • Supports up to 1,000kW charging
  • Designed for ultra-high-speed refuelling

Both models were first previewed in January, with their official images and specs surfacing in China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) regulatory filings. If these cars launch with Australia-compatible specs, they could seriously compete with Tesla’s Model S and Model X.
